Newcastle United's Sandro Tonali Extends Contract Amid Betting Ban
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has signed a contract extension during his betting ban, potentially extending his stay at the club until 2030.
Tonali initially joined Newcastle on a five-year deal following his £55 million transfer from AC Milan in July 2023.
However, in October 2023, the Italian was handed a 10-month ban by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for violating betting regulations.
Throughout his suspension, Newcastle provided support to Tonali, and it is reported that the two parties discussed a contract extension during this period.
Demonstrating his commitment to the club, Tonali agreed to extend his contract by an additional year, now running until 2029, with an option for Newcastle to extend it further to 2030.
This move ensures that Newcastle retains leverage, as they will not face the risk of having only two years remaining on Tonali's contract in the future.
Tonali has become an essential player under head coach Eddie Howe, who praised his physicality and overall contributions to the team.
"His physicality is one of the standout attributes that he possesses," Howe remarked earlier this month. "He consistently makes a difference for us in that regard. Most midfielders need a degree of athleticism and the ability to shift gears, particularly during counterattacks or when we need to advance forward. He has that ability, and when you combine it with his technical skills and tactical awareness, it makes him a truly exceptional player."
