Newcastle United Triumphs Over Athletic Club in Champions League
A pair of headers from Dan Burn and Joelinton propelled Newcastle United to a decisive victory against Athletic Club in the Champions League.
Both Burn and Joelinton were among nine players retained in the lineup following the team's defeat to West Ham over the weekend, and the experienced duo justified head coach Eddie Howe's trust at St James' Park.
Burn opened the scoring with a powerful header that struck the upright after connecting with a free-kick from Kieran Trippier just 11 minutes into the match.
Despite being plagued by injuries, Athletic Club did not back down. Left-back Adama Boiro nearly equalized, hitting the post with a volley, while Newcastle's goalkeeper Nick Pope had to be quick to block a shot from forward Unai Gomez with his foot.
Newcastle, who lost Anthony Gordon to a hip injury, extended their lead after the halftime break.
Harvey Barnes, making a return to the lineup, created space in the box with skillful footwork before delivering a cross to the unmarked Joelinton, who headed the ball past goalkeeper Unai Simon.
Athletic Club made a late push, with Pope saving a shot from substitute Nico Serrano, but Newcastle managed to secure the victory, moving ahead of Real Madrid into sixth place in the standings.
This win marked Newcastle's third consecutive victory in a major European competition, a feat they hadn't achieved since 2007.
Newcastle Analysis: Burn Leads by Example
Dan Burn expressed his frustration after Newcastle's previous performance, stating, "everybody knows we will turn up," following their lackluster showing at the London Stadium. However, he led by example against Athletic Club as his team responded strongly.
While not typically known for scoring, the 33-year-old defender delivered one of the most significant goals in Newcastle's recent history when he netted in the EFL Cup final last March. His header against Athletic Club evoked memories of that moment as he again combined effectively with Trippier, who has assisted five of Burn's nine goals for the club.
The goal was executed flawlessly, reminiscent of a training ground routine. Burn initially positioned himself outside the box alongside Athletic forward Robert Navarro before making a late run toward the back post as Trippier took the set-piece.
Standing at 6ft 7in, Burn managed to evade defenders, as Joelinton and Malick Thiaw blocked Athletic players Daniel Vivian and Jesus Areso, allowing him to direct a powerful header into the net. No wonder Newcastle's record goalscorer, Alan Shearer, was seen applauding from the directors' box, as it was a header that would have made him proud.
