Peterborough United Appoints Luke Williams as New Manager
Peterborough United has appointed former Swansea City manager Luke Williams on a two-and-a-half-year contract.
Williams replaces Darren Ferguson, who was dismissed after his fourth tenure ended following a 2-1 defeat to Blackpool on Saturday.
The team currently sits at the bottom of League One, having won only three of their 13 matches this season and trailing five points from safety.
Williams will lead the team in their upcoming FA Cup first-round match against Cardiff City this Saturday, with his first league game set for the following week against AFC Wimbledon at the Weston Homes Stadium.
Chairman Darragh MacAnthony described the appointment as the “start of a new era” for the club.
“This appointment isn’t solely about our current league position or recent poor results; it’s about establishing a lasting identity for our club,” MacAnthony stated. “Our club boasts an exceptional academy and talented young players in our first team. Our goal remains consistent: to play exciting, attacking football, nurture our young talent, identify and develop overlooked gems, compete with top teams, achieve promotions and trophies, and ensure financial sustainability. We want to be a well-run football club that our fans can take pride in supporting.”
Williams began his managerial career at Swindon Town in 2015 but was dismissed following relegation to League Two after the 2016-17 season. He later took charge of Notts County in the summer of 2022, leading the team to a club-record 107 points in his first full season and securing promotion back to the English Football League with a penalty shootout victory over Chesterfield at Wembley.
In January 2024, Williams took a step up to Swansea but lasted only 13 months before leaving due to a series of seven defeats in nine Championship matches.
At Peterborough, he will be assisted by Ryan Harley, who previously worked with Williams at Notts County and Swansea. “I spoke with the chairman and director of football Barry Fry, and it feels like a good fit for all of us,” Williams remarked. “The conversations I had with Darragh were very positive, and it presented an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.”
Analysis: Williams Aims to 'Break the Mould' but Faces Challenges
By Peter Swan, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Sports Editor
Luke Williams is the 13th managerial appointment made by Posh owner Darragh MacAnthony since he acquired the club in 2006. Among these managers, four have been Darren Ferguson, and only Grant McCann has managed to stay for more than a year.
Williams aims to break this trend. His preferred style of football is likely to resonate with Posh fans; however, he faces a significant challenge, as the team has secured only 16 victories out of 59 league matches since the beginning of last season.
