Phil Foden Shines as Manchester City Defeats Leeds in Premier League Clash
Phil Foden scored twice as Manchester City made significant progress in the Premier League title race, narrowly avoiding a collapse against struggling Leeds United.
This victory propels City to second place in the table following the Saturday afternoon matches, just four points behind league leaders Arsenal, while Leeds suffers its sixth defeat in seven matches.
What was expected to be a straightforward win turned challenging when Foden netted his first goal just 59 seconds into the match.
City dominated play as the England international converted Matheus Nunes' cross, followed by Josko Gvardiol extending their lead in the 25th minute.
With Leeds struggling to maintain possession and mount a significant attack, it appeared that Daniel Farke's team was merely trying to limit the damage.
Outstanding goalkeeping from Lucas Perri, who claimed he was obstructed during the buildup to Gvardiol's goal, kept the visitors in the game.
However, after halftime, Leeds gained momentum with the introduction of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who scored after Nunes deflected the ball into his path.
When Lukas Nmecha converted a penalty after Calvert-Lewin was fouled by City's Croatian defender Gvardiol, Leeds' hopes for an unexpected away victory, their first since September 20, were briefly revived.
Yet, on a day when Erling Haaland awaited his 100th Premier League goal, Foden stepped up to secure the win for City with a precise left-footed shot into the bottom left corner during stoppage time.
