Portsmouth Stuns West Brom with Late Equalizer in Championship Clash
Portsmouth rallied to secure a 1-1 draw against West Bromwich Albion, thwarting the Baggies' attempt at a third consecutive Championship victory. The match saw West Brom's manager, Ryan Mason, dismissed from the sidelines.
Mikey Johnston opened the scoring for West Brom with a stunning long-range strike that found the top corner in the first half.
After the break, Alex Mowatt nearly doubled the lead, hitting the post, but Colby Bishop equalized for Portsmouth against the run of play, ensuring that the home side walked away with a point.
Mason received a red card with 20 minutes remaining for dissent after referee Elliot Bell rejected West Brom's penalty appeals and subsequent calls for a second yellow card following what they deemed an unpunished foul.
Prior to this match, Mason had enjoyed a perfect start to his managerial career, winning his first two games. However, Portsmouth proved to be the more dangerous side from the outset. With forward Callum Lang sidelined for approximately six weeks due to a hamstring injury, manager John Mousinho had to make adjustments to his lineup, including the introduction of Florian Bianchini.
Adrian Segecic had an early chance that went wide, but he later assisted Bianchini in a one-on-one opportunity that was saved by West Brom's goalkeeper, Josh Griffiths, in the 20th minute.
It was Johnston, however, who struck first, delivering a powerful shot from the edge of the box into the top corner, leaving Portsmouth's goalkeeper, Nicolas Schmid, momentarily stunned.
Following their goal, West Brom maintained control, with Mowatt's shot hitting the post early in the second half. Yet, Portsmouth managed to equalize when Josh Murphy's cross found Bishop, who expertly headed the ball into the net.
West Brom then believed they had a penalty when Aune Heggebo was fouled in the box, but the referee dismissed their claims. Shortly after, when Heggebo was fouled again and play continued, Mason was shown a red card for his protests and sent off.
