Portugal's slim chances of advancing to the Euro 2025 quarter-finals were extinguished after a defeat by Belgium in their final group stage match.
To progress as runners-up in Group B, Portugal needed a victory over Belgium and required Italy to lose to Spain with a six-goal difference. However, Belgium, already out of contention following losses to Spain and Italy, took the lead just three minutes into the match in Sion. Captain Tessa Wullaert scored from a low cross delivered by Jill Janssens.
Despite Telma Encarnacao equalizing for Portugal with only three minutes left on the clock, Belgium secured a win with Janice Cayman's decisive goal in stoppage time.
After falling behind due to Wullaert's early goal, Ana Capeta missed two clear opportunities to level the score. She first failed to chip the ball over goalkeeper Lisa Lichtfus before halftime and then couldn't beat the Belgian keeper at the near post shortly after the restart.
Portugal was temporarily spared when Mariam Toloba's goal for Belgium was disallowed for a foul on Andreia Jacinto, following a review by referee Tess Olofsson at the pitchside monitor.
Belgium and Toloba were denied again when the striker's header from Wullaert's cross hit the woodwork before Encarnacao's equalizer. Amber Tysiak believed she had restored Belgium's lead in stoppage time, but her goal was ruled offside after a video assistant referee review, only for Cayman to clinch a dramatic winner moments later.
With Spain defeating Italy 3-1 in the other group match, Belgium finished third in Group B with three points, trailing Italy by one point, while Portugal ended at the bottom with just one point.
