Premier League Implements Squad-Cost Ratio System
The Premier League has introduced a trial squad-cost ratio system for this season aimed at financial control.
This system allows clubs to allocate a percentage of their total revenues to squad-related expenses.
It is akin to the Squad-Cost Ratio (SCR) utilized by UEFA for European competitions, which is capped at 70%.
Premier League clubs participating in European competitions will be subject to this 70% limit to comply with UEFA regulations.
This impacts clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea, Newcastle, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, and Nottingham Forest.
Richard Masters, the Premier League's chief executive, stated that clubs not competing in Europe will have a higher cap of 85%, emphasizing the league's commitment to enabling clubs to invest.
Additionally, the Premier League is testing a top-to-bottom anchoring model, which restricts the spending of any club based on a multiple of the income generated by the league's lowest-ranked team.
If adopted, these regulations would supersede the current Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and are expected to take effect at the beginning of the 2026-27 season.
