QPR Triumphs Over Leicester in Championship Clash
Marti Cifuentes faced a challenging return to Queens Park Rangers as his Leicester City team suffered a heavy defeat, allowing QPR to surpass the Foxes in the Championship standings.
Koki Saito opened the scoring for the hosts within the first two minutes, connecting with a precise cross from Amadou Mbengue to volley the ball into the net from close range. Richard Kone then capitalized on some lackluster defending near the penalty area, doubling QPR's lead just before the half-hour mark.
Karamoko Dembele added a third goal shortly after, finding the bottom corner of the net, and Mbengue capped off a dominant first half with a cross that turned into a shot, surprising Leicester goalkeeper Jakub Stolarczyk.
The second half did not see the same intensity as the first, but a handball by Sam Field in the penalty area gave Leicester the opportunity to score. Silko-Amari Thomas eventually converted after Bobby De Cordova-Reid's initial penalty kick hit the post.
Cifuentes took charge of Leicester five months ago after a protracted exit from QPR, during which he remained on gardening leave. Reports suggest he facilitated his transfer by personally covering half of the compensation fee owed to QPR.
After a shaky start to the season, Cifuentes had managed to collect seven points in three games at the beginning of December, seemingly alleviating some pressure. However, this defeat at Loftus Road represented a significant setback.
Meanwhile, his successor at QPR, Julien Stephan, had a rocky beginning, waiting five games for a win this season. Yet, he has since guided the R's to seventh place in the table, a remarkable improvement of nine points and seven positions compared to the same point last season under Cifuentes.
QPR's four goals in the first half marked their most comprehensive victory of the season. Saito's early strike set the tone, and Leicester's inability to defend a free-kick from Nicolas Madsen allowed Kone to finish from inside the box with ease. Dembele's goal further solidified their dominance, and Mbengue's goal just before the break sealed a tumultuous half for the Foxes.
Although QPR threatened to increase their tally after the break, Leicester showed signs of improvement but failed to create significant threats until Thomas's late penalty provided a consolation goal.
