Rangers Coach Discusses Nico Raskin's Future Amid Transfer Speculation
Rangers midfielder Nico Raskin has been affected by "uncertainty" regarding his future at the club, according to head coach Russell Martin.
The Belgium international has been the subject of speculation regarding high-profile transfers away from Ibrox, and Martin acknowledges that communications from external parties have influenced Raskin's mindset.
"There’s been a bit of uncertainty about him this summer, for sure," Martin remarked ahead of Tuesday's second leg of the Champions League third qualifying round against Viktoria Plzen. "Not from people contacting us, but I think from people reaching out to him, definitely. I think that’s affected his approach. Not in terms of professionalism, but he’s a young man, and it’s bound to have an impact at some point."
Raskin started the first three matches of Rangers' season but was not included in the starting lineup for the first leg against Viktoria Plzen, which Martin's team won 3-0 at Ibrox. The 24-year-old was again benched for Saturday's Premiership match against Dundee, though he made a notable impact as a substitute in the 1-1 draw.
Martin expressed satisfaction with Raskin's response to being sidelined. "He came out of the team for reasons we discussed, and his reaction has been outstanding, really brilliant," he said. "He’s a fantastic player, and I’m continually getting to know him. I really appreciate his character and personality. It’s my responsibility to ensure that everyone at this football club understands the clear demands, regardless of their position."
‘Hopefully we can get to the end of the window’
When asked if he anticipates Raskin remaining at Rangers beyond this summer, Martin stated it would require a "mind-blowing" offer for the club to consider selling one of last season's standout players. "I don’t think we’re in a position where we have to sell anyone," Martin noted. "I don’t think we want to lose some of our best performers from last season, who we believe can develop into top players for us going forward. Unless someone comes in with an offer that astounds us and everyone agrees—player and club—that it’s the best decision for all involved, we will ensure we can replace them effectively. It’s a situation every club in world football faces now; no club is truly immune to this reality. Hopefully, we can reach the end of the transfer window with him still here, having played brilliantly, allowing us to continue improving and progressing."
