Rangers Suffer Heavy Defeat in Champions League
Rangers experienced another humiliating defeat on Wednesday, exiting the Champions League with a 9-1 aggregate loss, including a staggering 6-0 defeat to Club Brugge in Belgium.
Under the management of Russell Martin, the team has secured only three victories in his first ten matches. Frustrated supporters expressed their discontent as the team was systematically dismantled.
Following the record-equalling European loss, Martin issued an apology to the fans, describing the match as "probably the toughest night" of his career.
In addition to the European setback, Rangers currently trail Celtic by six points in the Premiership, ahead of the first Old Firm derby of the season on Sunday. Unfortunately, none of Martin's summer signings have made a significant impact so far.
We sought the opinions of Rangers fans regarding their team and manager, and the responses were overwhelmingly critical.
‘Martin Ripping the Heart Out of Rangers’
Alan: Russell Martin appears to have lost the dressing room. A team is about individuals who fight for the club and each other. Bringing in new players is one thing, but ensuring they work together is another. I fear Martin is not up to the task.
David: Enough is enough. It's time for Martin to go. Others, including Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell, must also take responsibility. The result against Brugge was expected. Thankfully, they eased off in the second half. The team is spineless, gutless, and leaderless. As a supporter for 55 years, I never thought I would feel this way.
James: Martin's decision to leave experienced players on the bench shows he is out of his depth. He needs to be dismissed!
Peter: Surely the new owners must realize they made a mistake in appointing Martin. His tactics and team selection are unlikely to change, and too many young players are in the squad who will struggle to recover from this defeat. He is ripping the heart out of Rangers, and someone needs to take action. Just look at the statistics!
Robert: Martin is not the right manager for Rangers. The board chose the easy option and should have gone for Davide Ancelotti or retained Barry Ferguson. Given the current trajectory, I fear another heavy defeat on Sunday.
Steve: Please bring Ferguson back as manager. We need someone who understands what it means to be a Rangers man, someone who shares our pain.
Anon: This Martin experiment seems to be more about his ego than the club. His ego is an affront to Rangers and everything they stand for. He must do the honorable thing and resign.
James: I see parallels with Southampton's struggles in the Premier League last season. Martin is simply not good enough for Rangers. If he continues with his current approach, I fear Rangers will find themselves battling in the lower half of the Premiership. The board must face reality, admit their mistake in appointing Martin, and part ways with him. Bring back Barry or Steven Gerrard, or both!
Paul: Humiliating, shameful, unacceptable. Three words that sum up what Rangers have become under Martin. The team is a complete shambles, lacking guts, pride, and employing tactics that belong in a primary school playground. He has run out of time.
Players ‘Look and Play Like Schoolboys’
Fans' criticism of the players, particularly the summer signings, was almost as severe as their critique of Martin.
Ivie: The recruitment has been dreadful, and many of these players are simply not up to the task. Leaving out Raskin again suggests that not everything is well behind the scenes, and it’s only a matter of time before something has to change because the club is in turmoil.
Dave: Keep Jack Butland and let the rest go. These players do not deserve to wear the blue shirt.
Robert: Many of Martin's signings are questionable. None have European experience, and they appear to play like schoolboys. How long will the new owners tolerate this level of performance? It's embarrassing.
Ian: The players, except for Butland, who prevented the score from reaching double figures, should consider refunding the fans who traveled to Belgium. It was an absolute disgrace.
Alan: The next manager will face a significant challenge. None of Martin's signings have made a positive impact.
Dobby: I am utterly embarrassed to be a Rangers supporter. After nearly 40 years with the club, I have never seen such a hapless team. Poor recruitment followed by terrible strategy has led to a complete shambles. With each season, we are getting worse—the club's strategy, recruitment, and managerial decisions are all flawed.
Andrew: Three out of the back four are on loan, meaning next season will likely see another overhaul of the defense for these qualifiers. There is no forward planning, inadequate tactics, and a significant lack of physicality and passion in the team.
Kevin: There are talented players at the club who are either benched or forced to play in a confusing system.
Calum: Experienced players have been sidelined in favor of loaned youth who are clearly out of their depth. Southampton supporters warned us. Martin must go immediately.
Steven: The club needs not only a new manager but also two central defenders, a right-back, left-back, central midfielder, and two strikers. The loan deals have not worked out. The board must act quickly and admit they made a mistake in hiring Martin. I would consider bringing in Jose Mourinho or Sean Dyche.
