Republic of Ireland Manager Comments on Gender Pay Equality
Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson stated that the issue of gender pay equality is not for him to determine.
On Sunday, it was reported that former women's head coach Eileen Gleeson is pursuing a discrimination case against the Football Association of Ireland, alleging mistreatment of her and her support staff based on gender.
Gleeson, who succeeded Vera Pauw in August 2023, was not offered a contract extension following the team's failure to qualify for Euro 2025.
She also claims that the senior women's team did not receive the same level of travel, security, medical, and performance support as the men's team.
When asked about his perspective on gender equality between the men's and women's teams, Hallgrimsson expressed that it "depends on the job."
"That's not for me to decide," he remarked during a press conference ahead of Saturday's opening World Cup qualifier against Hungary. "I can only speak from my own experience. I was offered a job, and it was my choice to accept or decline it. Many coaches are in similar positions, often earning significantly more than I do, while others receive far less.
"I have the right to accept or refuse a job offer, and I believe that is independent of gender," he added.
Hallgrimsson indicated that he does not see it as part of his role to engage in such discussions, but noted that wage disparities are not solely a matter of gender.
"It’s similar to players," he explained. "The highest-paid players in the world do not necessarily play more games or train harder, but they are valued more highly. The valuation in this sport is determined by others."
