Ruben Amorim Stands Firm Amid Media Pressure on Tactical Changes

Head coach Ruben Amorim has stated that if he had altered Manchester United's formation due to media pressure, it would have marked the end of his tenure.

In a recent match against Newcastle United, Amorim deviated from his usual back three with wing-backs, opting instead for a traditional back four complemented by two holding midfielders.

As the game progressed, this formation evolved into a back six, allowing his team to secure a victory and achieve only their second clean sheet of the season.

Despite previously asserting that not even the Pope could compel him to modify his tactics, Amorim emphasized that he has always intended to employ various formations. However, he noted that such changes should only be made when the team is performing well, to avoid the appearance of capitulating to external pressures.

“When I came here last season, I realized I might not have the players suited for that system, but it was the start of a process,” he explained. “We were working on building an identity. Now, the situation is different. We have fewer players, and we need to adapt, so they understand the reasons behind our changes.”

“It’s not due to pressure from the media or the fans. When you [the media] constantly discuss changing the system, I cannot make that change, as the players will perceive it as a response to your influence, which I believe would signify the end for the manager.”

“When we are performing well in our system, that is the right moment to implement changes. We will improve as a team because once all the players return, we won’t always play with three defenders.”

With only two victories in eight matches leading up to the win against Newcastle, one could question whether Amorim’s assertion about his team’s performance holds true.

He is indeed navigating a challenging situation, with seven senior players sidelined for the upcoming match against winless Wolverhampton Wanderers. This number may rise if Mason Mount is unable to recover from the injury that saw him exit the Newcastle match at halftime.

Captain Bruno Fernandes is among those unavailable for the Wolves match, although he has been urging his manager to let him return following a hamstring injury sustained during the defeat to Aston Villa on December 21.

“Bruno is already saying he needs to train,” Amorim remarked. “But there is no chance he will play against Wolves. No chance. You can write that.”

Nevertheless, the 31-year-old is expected to remain actively involved. Unlike many injured players who watch matches from the directors' box or a private suite, Fernandes was observed closely monitoring warm-ups from the tunnel during the Newcastle game.

Amorim anticipates that his captain will continue to contribute positively. “He is a leader,” he stated. “He cannot be the type of player who doesn’t communicate when he’s not on the field. He is always vocal, which is why he is the captain.”

“He has his flaws at times, particularly in how he expresses himself, but he also has numerous strengths. After recovering from games or treatment, he actively engages with the team during training sessions. There are many aspects of his leadership that go unnoticed.”

While the exact timeline for the returns of Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Matthijs de Ligt, and Harry Maguire remains uncertain, Noussair Mazraoui, Amad Diallo, and Bryan Mbeumo are expected to return from the Africa Cup of Nations by the end of January.
