Sheffield Wednesday Falls to Oxford United Amid Administration Woes
Sheffield Wednesday faced a harsh reminder of their struggles on the pitch as they succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Oxford United at Hillsborough.
Just one day after the club entered administration and received a 12-point deduction from the English Football League, the Championship's bottom team suffered their fourth consecutive loss.
Despite attracting a season-high crowd of 27,261, Wednesday has now lost six of their last seven home matches, having secured only one victory since New Year’s Day.
Goals in the first half from Will Lankshear and a free-kick by Cameron Brannagan allowed Oxford to claim their second win in three games, moving them four points clear of the relegation zone and up to 19th place.
Sean Fusire managed to reduce the deficit early in the second half, but Jamal Lowe squandered a significant opportunity to equalize, leaving Wednesday with a total of minus six points and 16 points adrift of safety.
Despite the turmoil of recent days, the atmosphere around the South Yorkshire club was somewhat buoyed by the fact that administration signals the end of Dejphon Chansiri's ownership.
Frustrated fans had previously taken drastic measures to express their dissatisfaction with the club's management, culminating in a boycott during the defeat against Middlesbrough on Wednesday.
However, supporters returned in droves for this match, eagerly purchasing food and drinks from kiosks and shopping at the club's megastore.
Unfortunately for them, the first half served as a stark reminder of why they were already at the bottom of the league before the points deduction came into play.
Goalkeeper Joe Lumley had made a commendable save from Filip Krastev’s shot before he was beaten by Lankshear's header, which resulted from a problematic delivery into the box from Brannagan.
Bailey Cadamarteri had one shot saved by Jamie Cumming, but it was Brannagan who doubled the visitors' lead with a stunning set-piece from at least 30 yards out, catching everyone off guard as he drilled the ball low past Lumley for his third goal of the season.
Despite their diminished squad, Wednesday's resilience under Henrik Pedersen was evident, particularly in the second half.
They found a glimmer of hope just seven minutes after the break when 20-year-old Fusire netted his first senior goal, capitalizing on a loose ball following a poorly cleared cross from Harry Amass.
Cadamarteri came close to converting Svante Ingelsson’s low cross, and Amass had a header saved by Cumming, but Lowe had the best chance to equalize just minutes before the end.
A ball fell to him about 10 yards out, but he volleyed it directly at the goalkeeper, denying the Kop a chance to celebrate and leaving the match without a thrilling conclusion to a week that will not be forgotten.
