Stuart Findlay Signs Permanent Deal with Hearts
Hearts' ascent to the top of the Scottish Premiership has been characterized by standout performances from their forwards, but defender Stuart Findlay has proven to be an equally invaluable asset.
Returning to Scottish football, the former Kilmarnock player came back on loan from Oxford United last summer and has now agreed to a permanent deal that will keep him at Tynecastle until 2028.
This season, Findlay has been a consistent presence in the league, contributing five goals. His header played a pivotal role in Hearts' victory over Rangers last month, and he secured an important win with a late double against Dundee United.
The 30-year-old has also been instrumental in helping manager Derek McInnes achieve a record 12 clean sheets this season, making 136 clearances—more than Celtic's Liam Scales (106) and Rangers' John Souttar (90).
Statistics reflect his strong performance, and like all Hearts signings, he underwent assessment by Jamestown Analytics, passing with flying colors.
“If he had rated poorly, we wouldn’t have signed him. It just wouldn’t have gone through,” McInnes remarked on Open Goal in October. “He’s a fantastic teammate, allowing us to play with a high line and providing balance on the left side.”
Long-Term Commitment for Hearts
Findlay is the second 30-year-old defender to commit his long-term future to Hearts, following centre-back partner Craig Halkett, who signed a similar deal on Christmas Day.
Halkett has also contributed goals after overcoming a series of injuries, including a decisive goal against Livingston last Saturday.
By securing both players, McInnes demonstrates his intent to build a strong defensive foundation for Hearts with homegrown talent.
“Stuart has been everything I expected when he joined us in the summer,” said McInnes, who previously managed him at Kilmarnock. “He’s been part of a successful defense, poses a threat in opposition boxes, and is the kind of character you want in the dressing room. He loves it here and wants to be part of something special, so it made perfect sense to secure his future.”
National Team Aspirations
Motherwell right-back and Scotland international Stephen O'Donnell recently stated that it is essential for all Scottish players to give national manager Steve Clarke a “headache” as the World Cup approaches.
Both Findlay and Halkett are contenders, with Findlay having the edge of previous experience under Clarke at Kilmarnock. He has also made one international appearance, contributing to a 6-0 victory over San Marino in 2019.
Clarke is known for his loyalty to players who have performed well for him, and Findlay faces competition from established players like Grant Hanley, Jack Hendry, Scott McKenna, Souttar, and Kieran Tierney.
“There are a few players on the fringes right now,” McInnes noted. “In big tournaments, injuries can lead to unexpected opportunities. If you're playing for a team at the top of the league, you have significant players who could catch the manager's eye.”
Findlay added, “Every professional football player aspires to represent their country until the day they retire. It’s the highest honor in the game. I trust the manager to select the best squad. For me, the priority this season is to perform well at Hearts, and being involved with the national team would be a massive bonus.”
