Swansea City Stages Late Comeback to Draw with Watford
Zan Vipotnik's late header enabled Swansea City to secure a draw against Watford, after a stunning free-kick from teenager Nestory Irankunda had appeared to set the Hornets on course for their first away win in a long time.
Vipotnik, who came on as a substitute, scored with almost his first touch, rescuing a point for Alan Sheehan's side, which had seemed destined for defeat.
Irankunda's first-half goal marked his initial strike since joining Watford from Bayern Munich this summer, and it may be a while before he nets a more impressive one.
After being fouled by Josh Key, the 19-year-old Australian international recovered to deliver a magnificent set-piece that soared over the Swansea wall and into the corner of the net.
Watford had applied pressure throughout the match, with Luca Kjerrumgaard's header being denied as Swansea goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux tipped the ball onto the crossbar, and Ben Cabango later cleared the ball off the line.
Early in the second half, Kjerrumgaard's shot forced another save from Vigouroux before Swansea began to pose an attacking threat around the hour mark.
After Liam Cullen redirected Josh Tymon's low cross onto the near post, Watford seemed on the verge of securing their first away victory since February.
However, Slovenia forward Vipotnik, who has been rumored to be leaving Swansea during the current transfer window, met Ethan Galbraith's cross with a header that bounced into the net off the far post.
From that moment, it was Swansea who appeared more likely to claim victory, with Goncalo Franco being thwarted by Egil Selvik in stoppage time.
Analysis: Watford Impress Before Swansea's Resilient Response
Swansea's home performance under Sheehan has been remarkable, boasting six wins—each accompanied by a clean sheet—and only one defeat in nine league matches since he took over a team that was struggling in February.
Conversely, Watford arrived in Wales following six consecutive defeats in the second tier, marking the club's worst run of away league losses outside the top flight since 1993.
Yet, this is the Championship, where unpredictability is the only certainty.
Watford's physical strength, combined with the attacking threats posed by Irankunda and fellow summer signing Kjerrumgaard, created significant challenges for Swansea during the first hour of the match.
Manager Paulo Pezzolano will be disappointed that Watford failed to secure all three points during that period, and he will also be concerned about the injury that forced Irankunda off just before the game's momentum shifted.
On the other hand, Sheehan can take pride in the resilience his team demonstrated in clawing back into a match that appeared to be slipping away from them.
Another individual pleased with Swansea's response is Cordell Broadus, the son of rapper Snoop Dogg, who observed from the directors' box after his father became a co-investor in the Welsh club last month.
