Sweden Parts Ways with Manager Jon Dahl Tomasson Amid World Cup Qualifying Struggles
Sweden has dismissed manager Jon Dahl Tomasson following a disappointing start to their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.
The team currently sits at the bottom of Group B, having earned only one point from four matches, including a 1-0 loss to Kosovo on Monday.
Despite boasting a talented forward lineup featuring Liverpool's Alexander Isak and Arsenal's Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden has struggled, managing only a draw against Slovenia and losses to both Kosovo and Switzerland in their initial group fixtures.
Tomasson, who previously managed Blackburn Rovers and had a successful playing career at Newcastle United, became Sweden's first foreign coach when he took the helm in February 2024.
Swedish Football Association chairman Simon Astrom stated, "The decision is based on the fact that the men’s national team has not delivered the results we hoped for. There is still a chance for a play-off in March, and our responsibility is to ensure that we have optimal conditions to reach a World Cup play-off. In this, we assess that a new leadership is required in the form of a new coach."
Sweden will next face Switzerland away before hosting Slovenia in their final two matches, aiming to catch up with second-placed Kosovo, who currently have seven points in Group B.
