Numerous TikTok videos demonstrate how to tape wrists like notable players such as Phil Foden, Jamie Vardy, and Vinicius Jr. Foden, who did not wear tape until he fractured his hand in January 2024, has continued to use it since then.

How Can Tape Protect Players?
Ben Warburton, a physiotherapist with experience working with Cardiff City and Wales' national rugby union team, explains that players like Foden wear tape for various injury-related reasons. One key reason is for "prophylactic measures," which help reduce the risk of wrist injuries when footballers fall. Tape can also limit extension at the wrist joint.
Warburton notes, "Taping can provide reassurance after an injury. This restriction in movement can boost a player's confidence, allowing them to play more aggressively, knowing their wrist has some protection if they fall." Additionally, wrist tape can serve aesthetic or tactical purposes, particularly for goalkeepers who may write notes on their tape, such as instructions for penalty shootouts.
