Tom Lockyer Returns to Bristol Rovers Following Cardiac Arrest
Tom Lockyer is set to resume his football career nearly two years after experiencing a cardiac arrest during a match, having signed a one-year contract with Bristol Rovers.
The 30-year-old defender from Wales has been training with the League Two club after regaining his fitness, following a cardiac arrest he suffered while playing for Luton Town in a Premier League match against Bournemouth in December 2023.
This marks Lockyer's return to the club where he began his professional career, six years after leaving to join Charlton Athletic.
He transferred to Luton in 2020 and played a key role in the club's promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs in 2023. However, the victory at Wembley was overshadowed by his collapse during the game.
Lockyer managed to return to action later that year before the cardiac incident against Bournemouth occurred.
"It feels really, really good to be a Bristol Rovers player again," Lockyer expressed on the club's website. "I’ve been training here for a while, and I tried not to overthink it or get overly excited about the possibilities. But once I knew that Darrell [Clarke, the head coach] wanted to finalize a deal, it became an easy decision for me to come back home.
"It’s hard to put into words, but this is everything I’ve worked so hard for over the last two years. I hope to create many more wonderful memories in a football shirt. I plan to celebrate the little victories on the pitch and just want to enjoy it. I wouldn’t be doing this otherwise. I’m returning to football because I love the game, and there’s no better place to do that than back home at Bristol Rovers."
Coach Darrell Clarke commented, "I’m thrilled to have Tom back with us. I have a great deal of admiration for him, which has only grown after everything he and his family have endured over the past couple of years. I always believed he had the talent to reach the highest level, and he proved that by playing in the Premier League with Luton Town. His commitment and work ethic embody everything our fans appreciate about our players. It’s been fantastic having him around the training ground, and he has already integrated well into the group. I can’t wait to see him back in action wearing the blue-and-white quarters."
