Tottenham Hotspur Supporters Criticize Club's Ambition
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust (THST) has expressed concerns over what it describes as a "dramatic fall in ambition" following a meeting with senior club representatives. This comes in the wake of the team's disappointing performance, having won only one of their last six Premier League matches and currently sitting 14th in the league table with 27 points—just three points more than at the same time last season.
During the meeting held on Friday, THST board members discussed various supporter concerns with club officials. The meeting followed a tense atmosphere after Tottenham's recent 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth, where several players were seen being escorted away from irate fans.
Fans expressed their frustration towards manager Thomas Frank, who faced criticism not only for the team's performance but also for being photographed with a coffee cup featuring the logo of rival club Arsenal prior to the match.
In a statement, THST highlighted the club's lack of transfer activity this month as indicative of diminished ambition, referencing Frank's comments about the team's struggles. The statement noted, "He reminded supporters that the club finished 17th in the Premier League last season and that participation in the Champions League is only due to winning the Europa League. Furthermore, he referred to Bournemouth, a team without a win in 11 games, as 'always a difficult team' and admitted he is 'not enjoying the job.'"
THST also criticized players for allegedly confronting fans who were exercising their right to express their opinions and pointed to the "embarrassment" caused by club captain Cristian Romero's social media activity. After the match against Bournemouth, Romero made an Instagram post suggesting that "other people" should come forward to speak, implying that some only appear when the team is performing well, to "tell a few lies." This post was later deleted and reposted with a revised caption.
THST stated, "While these incidents may have explanations that we could understand and even sympathize with, they demonstrate a lack of understanding and care regarding the perception of the football club." The organization urged club leadership to address these issues publicly and to improve direct communication with fans.
"Fans need to hear directly from the club leadership about the ambition for the football club this season, next season, and into the future. This starts with the upcoming transfer window, where significant efforts must be made to show that Tottenham Hotspur is a serious football club committed to winning more often," the statement concluded.
In response, Frank emphasized during a media conference on Thursday that despite external noise, the club's leadership remains unified. He stated, "I think it’s very important to stress that even though there’s noise, the club is very aligned. Johan Lange, Vinai Venkatesham, and I are all on the same page. The ownership is also very aligned. We know it’s a tough period that we need to overcome."
