Wales Engages Mikey Moore for Potential International Switch
Wales has initiated discussions with highly regarded teenage winger Mikey Moore of Tottenham Hotspur regarding a potential switch of international allegiance from England.
The 18-year-old London native, currently on loan at Scottish Premiership club Rangers, has previously represented England at the Under-19 level but is eligible to play for Wales through a grandparent.
According to sources from BBC Sport Wales, the Football Association of Wales has reached out to Moore, with men's head coach Craig Bellamy among those who have communicated with him.
Moore holds the distinction of being the youngest player to have ever played for Spurs in the Premier League, making his debut at just 16 years and 277 days old in May 2024.
He also set a record by becoming the youngest English scorer in a major European competition during Tottenham's Europa League-winning campaign last season, surpassing the previous record held by Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves.
Since joining Rangers on loan in August, Moore has made six appearances across all competitions so far this season.
There is no immediate pressure for him to decide on his international future, as many players have successfully switched national teams in the past.
Current Wales players, such as David Brooks and Jordan James, previously represented England at youth levels, while Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice made the switch to England after playing in three senior friendlies for the Republic of Ireland.
As of 2020, regulations have been relaxed, allowing players to change their international allegiance if they have participated in no more than three competitive matches at the senior level before turning 21.
However, participation in World Cup finals or continental finals, such as the European Championships, would prevent a change of eligibility. Conversely, appearances in tournament qualifiers would not impose such restrictions.
Previously, any appearance in a competitive match, including Nations League games, would permanently bind players to that country for the remainder of their international careers.
