West Ham and Brighton Share Points in Thrilling Encounter
West Ham United were held to a draw by Brighton & Hove Albion, marking the Hammers' eighth consecutive match without a win in the Premier League, as they continue to battle relegation.
The match was marked by chaos, featuring three penalties awarded in the first half—only the second instance of this occurrence in Premier League history. Danny Welbeck scored and then missed a penalty for Brighton, while Lucas Paqueta successfully converted a penalty for West Ham.
Joel Veltman scored Brighton's second equalizer of the evening, as both teams squandered opportunities to secure a victory.
Brighton began the match strongly, but it was Jarrod Bowen who capitalized on West Ham's first chance, finishing coolly after receiving a through ball from Paqueta in the 10th minute.
Welbeck equalized from the penalty spot in the 30th minute after Yankuba Minteh was fouled in the box by Max Kilman. However, just two minutes later, Welbeck hit the crossbar with a second penalty after Paqueta's controversial tackle on Lewis Dunk.
A VAR review just before half-time resulted in West Ham being awarded a penalty after Dunk blocked Callum Wilson's goal-bound shot with his arm. Paqueta converted the penalty in the fourth minute of stoppage time, becoming only the second player in Premier League history to both score and concede a penalty in the first half of a match.
Brighton sought another penalty early in the second half when substitute Kaoru Mitoma went down, but they equalized from the resulting corner when Alphonse Areola inadvertently palmed the ball into Veltman's path.
Bart Verbruggen denied Bowen an immediate response with a header, while Areola was called into action to stop Mitoma and Georginio Rutter at the other end.
West Ham Analysis: Improvement, but Defensive Errors Prove Costly
After conceding a late goal to Fulham on Saturday, West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo expressed his frustration with the team's misfortunes. Just three days later, he might have felt similarly, as the Hammers' troubles were largely self-inflicted.
Bowen's composed finish, against the run of play, could have served as a springboard for the team, bringing him level with Michail Antonio for the most combined goals and assists in Premier League history for the club, with 101 each.
However, Kilman's desperate last-ditch lunge resulted in a penalty, and Paqueta's tackle bore resemblance to a move from American football.
West Ham were fortunate to be punished only once, but luck was not on their side when Areola struggled with a corner 16 minutes into the second half.
Despite the setbacks, there were positives to take from the match; Wilson and Bowen displayed good chemistry in attack, while 20-year-old left-back Ollie Scarles showed resilience after a previous mistake against Fulham.
With Nottingham Forest, currently in 17th place, losing at home to Everton, West Ham missed a crucial opportunity to close the gap to safety.
The Hammers must address their defensive errors before it becomes too late.
