West Ham Manager Seeks Turnaround Amidst Tough Start
West Ham United manager Graham Potter expressed that his team is "hurting" following a challenging start to the season but remains optimistic about getting back on track.
The Hammers suffered defeats in their first two Premier League matches against Sunderland and Chelsea, and were subsequently eliminated from the Carabao Cup by Wolves earlier this week.
These results have intensified pressure on Potter; however, the former Brighton and Chelsea manager believes the club is close to achieving a performance that will reignite their campaign.
"I’m an experienced manager, and it’s my responsibility to support the players," Potter stated ahead of their upcoming match against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
"We’re all feeling the pain, especially after a promising pre-season. Losing to Sunderland and Chelsea has been difficult, and we acknowledge that our performance has not met expectations. However, I believe we are not far from a performance and result that can set us back on a positive trajectory."
In a bid to strengthen the squad, West Ham recently signed Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Southampton for over £40 million.
Potter noted that the 21-year-old will bring a "different dimension" to the team, while also hinting at the possibility of further signings before the transfer window closes on Monday.
"We will continue to explore options until the end of the window," the 50-year-old added. "You never know what might happen, and I anticipate that there will be significant activity as the deadline approaches. We must remain vigilant and aligned to make the right decisions. Our focus is on improving the team and developing the players we already have."
Bowen's Passion Shines Through
West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen faced a tense moment with supporters after the EFL Cup defeat against Wolves on Tuesday, requiring intervention from stewards and teammates.
Following the match, Bowen approached the traveling fans to acknowledge them, but reacted after comments from the stands.
When asked about the incident, Potter expressed understanding of the fans' frustrations. "Jarrod made a statement after the Wolves game. He’s a valuable player for this club, but we recognize the fans are upset. We need to stay united and strive for improvement moving forward," he said.
Shortly after the match, Bowen took to Instagram to apologize for his reaction, stating, "I’m passionate and will fight for the team every time I step on the pitch. However, I need to set a better example. You fans know how much I love you and this club. We will get through these tough times together, and I’ll see you all on Sunday."
