West Ham's new manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, emphasizes the importance of fostering a closer relationship between the club's fans and players, acknowledging that there is significant work ahead.
During his first match in charge, a 1-1 draw against Everton, chants of "sack the board" echoed from the stands, reflecting recent discontent among supporters. However, after Jarrod Bowen's equalizer secured a hard-fought point, Nuno made a point to engage with the traveling fans, demonstrating a commitment to unity.
"It’s crucial to recognize the effort our fans made to travel to Liverpool on a Monday night and the support they provided," Nuno stated. "Our main priority is to strengthen our connection with them. We need to deliver results so they can appreciate the players’ efforts. Moving forward, this is essential."
Following a promising start with a point away from home, Nuno expressed confidence in his players, stating they will "embrace the challenge" ahead. "I believe the team competed well. Coming to this venue is always tough against a quality side," he remarked. "Overall, it was an intense match with chances for both teams. Our focus now is on how we can continue to compete effectively."
Nuno also mentioned that he has opted for a cautious approach regarding tactical changes, preferring to implement gradual improvements rather than a complete overhaul. "It’s important not to change too much too quickly. When you arrive at a new club, you need to progress slowly and seek the right options and solutions. Our goal now is to enhance what we have," he explained.
What Changes Have Occurred for West Ham?
Statistically, there were few significant differences in West Ham's performance against Everton compared to their previous matches this season. This was expected, given Nuno had only been in charge for two days and was beginning to implement the necessary "small steps" for improvement.
The team recorded 14 shots, an increase from their average of 10.2 in the last five Premier League fixtures, although they did register fewer shots on target than usual. Notably, they achieved 29 touches in Everton's penalty area, significantly higher than their average of 19 in earlier league games.
While the team displayed a slightly more direct style, with 13.8% of their passes played long compared to 11.6% previously, it was their effective play during transitions that posed the greatest threat to Everton, particularly with Crysencio Summerville involved in many attacking sequences.
Bowen highlighted that Nuno's approach was "simple and basic." He shared with BBC Radio 5 Live, "There wasn’t a lot of change because he understood the players had only two days to adapt. He kept it straightforward. We have a strong group eager to improve our situation. Regardless of any managerial changes, we must hold ourselves accountable and fight together in the Premier League every week."
