West Ham Signs Mateus Fernandes from Southampton
West Ham United has secured the signing of midfielder Mateus Fernandes from Southampton in a deal exceeding £40 million.
The 21-year-old Portuguese player has joined the club on a five-year contract, making him West Ham's third-largest signing to date, following Sebastien Haller (£45 million) and Lucas Paquetá (£51 million).
Fernandes transferred to Southampton from Sporting Lisbon for £15 million in 2024, allowing the Saints to realize a significant profit after just one year.
During his time with Southampton, he made 46 appearances, netting four goals and providing seven assists.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the move, Fernandes stated, "I’m very excited to play for West Ham. I think it’s a big step for me. It’s a big club, a massive club. The project, the stadium, the city, everything."
This acquisition is expected to provide a much-needed boost for under-pressure Hammers manager Graham Potter, whose team has lost their first three matches of the season across all competitions.
West Ham suffered a 3-0 defeat to newly-promoted Sunderland in their opening Premier League match, followed by a 5-1 loss to Chelsea, and they were eliminated by Wolves in the second round of the Carabao Cup.
Additionally, West Ham is nearing the completion of a deal for Monaco midfielder Soungoutou Magassa, 21, for approximately £17.3 million.
