Antoine Semenyo's Transfer Saga: Manchester City in Pursuit
Every transfer window features a player whose future becomes the focal point of discussions. This January, that player appears to be Antoine Semenyo.
Manchester City is in advanced negotiations to acquire the 25-year-old Bournemouth forward, who has a £65 million release clause set to expire on January 10.
According to BBC Sport, four other Premier League clubs—Manchester United, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea—have also expressed interest.
This development is part of a remarkable ascent for Semenyo, who, despite being born in London, represents Ghana internationally through his father's heritage.
After being rejected by Arsenal, Spurs, and Millwall during his youth, he joined a West Country academy managed by former Leeds and Forest Green manager Dave Hockaday.
Bristol City signed him in 2017, but he required loan spells at Bath, Newport, and Sunderland before securing a spot in the Robins' first team during the 2020-21 season.
In January 2023, he transferred to Bournemouth for £10 million, and his performance has been on an upward trajectory since then.
But why is Manchester City pursuing Semenyo now? Can Bournemouth convince him to remain with the club?
Why Does Manchester City Want Semenyo?
The £65 million fee is considered a bargain for a Premier League winger entering the prime of his career. Thus, it is no surprise that Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are eager to secure Semenyo's services, even though his statistics suggest he may not significantly enhance their current wide options.
This season, Semenyo has created fewer chances per 90 minutes than Rayan Cherki or Jeremy Doku, and his dribble success rate ranks just above Savinho among the dedicated wingers in City's senior squad.
However, his offensive contributions stand out, boasting a better goal and assist rate per game compared to Doku, Savinho, Phil Foden, and Omar Marmoush. He has netted four goals and provided two assists following a carry, tying for the most among Premier League players since the start of April.
Moreover, his playing style would add a new dimension to City's attack as they aim to close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Being proficient with both feet, only Mohamed Salah and Cole Palmer have attempted more shots than Semenyo, while his total of 69 successful dribbles ranks third in the league.
“He can drive forward with the ball vertically, unlike Doku, who tends to drift in and out,” former England goalkeeper Rob Green remarked on BBC 5 Live. “He offers something different that Pep is looking for. With current injury issues, he can provide immediate assistance while also being a long-term asset.”
The Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) will not affect Semenyo, as Ghana surprisingly failed to qualify. Guardiola has previously praised Semenyo, describing him as an “extraordinary player” who possesses remarkable energy, confidence, and movement.
Semenyo's performance backs up Guardiola's high praise. Since April, he has been directly involved in 16 Premier League goals, trailing only City striker Erling Haaland and Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers.
He has scored 12 league goals during this period, second only to Haaland, and has exceeded his expected goals tally more than any player except West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen.
In total, Semenyo has contributed to 20 Premier League goals in 2025, with 14 goals and six assists—making him only the second Ghanaian international to achieve such a feat, following Tony Yeboah at Leeds in 1995.
If he scores again against either Brentford on December 27 or Chelsea three days later, he will surpass Dominic Solanke's club record for goal involvements in a calendar year.
“He’s a brilliant player,” former Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given commented on BBC Match of the Day. “At 25, he is at the peak of his career.”
Can Bournemouth Retain Him?
Having contributed to 11 of Bournemouth's 26 goals this season, manager Andoni Iraola is eager to keep Semenyo, especially as the Cherries have been winless in their last seven league matches, currently sitting 15th in the table.
Despite their struggles, there remains optimism at Bournemouth, as they are closer to the top four than the relegation zone in terms of points.
Iraola is recognized as one of the most tactically astute managers in the Premier League, successfully maximizing Semenyo's potential, which has attracted interest from numerous top clubs.
With new training facilities and plans for a new stadium, Bournemouth has more to offer Semenyo.
Former Bournemouth striker Sam Vokes stated on BBC Solent, “I don’t understand why he would want to leave this setup. I know that when bigger clubs come calling, it can be tempting. However, considering his performance and enjoyment at Bournemouth, it’s hard to see why he would want to go elsewhere right now.”
Bournemouth has only lost two matches in which Semenyo scored since his debut in 2023, reinforcing teammate Justin Kluivert's earlier assertion: “He is incredible. He shows it every game. He is just world-class.”
Analysis: Semenyo In, Savinho or Bobb Out?
Manchester City spent heavily last January due to an injury crisis and appears ready to make another big-money signing in Semenyo under different circumstances this time.
As they chase Arsenal in the Premier League title race, Guardiola aims to bolster the right side of his attack with the addition of the Ghanaian, who brings pace and directness.
However, Semenyo's arrival could lead to the departure of either Savinho or Oscar Bobb to make room for him, with Tottenham previously expressing interest in the Brazilian.
Semenyo Fits Guardiola's New Style
Semenyo's profile is unique, and at the reported price, he seems like an ideal acquisition. This season, City has shifted towards a faster, more transitional attacking style, capitalizing on the strengths of players like Haaland, Foden, Tijjani Reijnders, and Doku.
Consequently, City has scored more goals from counter-attacks this season than in the entirety of the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons combined.
