Arsenal's Mixed Results Against Top Rivals Amid Injury Struggles
Arsenal faced a challenging week, competing against Tottenham, Bayern Munich, and Chelsea, a test that would challenge any team. Despite securing two victories and a hard-fought draw, the Gunners may feel they had the potential for an even better outcome.
After impressive performances against their rivals, including a victory over Spurs and a win against Bayern at the Emirates, the match against Chelsea proved difficult due to limited recovery time.
Compounding their challenges, key center-back William Saliba was ruled out with an injury sustained in training, with further assessments pending for the French international.
In light of these circumstances, a 1-1 draw secured by Mikel Merino's header, leaving Arsenal five points clear at the top of the table, is a respectable result. However, manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged that the team missed a chance to extend their lead further, especially after Chelsea's Moises Caicedo received a red card, leaving the Gunners to play against ten men for most of the match.
“It’s been a big week, starting with the derby,” Arteta remarked. “Then to play Bayern Munich three days later, we lost players in those games.”
He added, “Today, for example, we had to field a defensive partnership that had never played together before in a really challenging match. The captain (Martin Odegaard) is still unavailable, our striker (Viktor Gyokeres) is out, and we also lost Leo (Trossard) midweek. But the team had to adapt.”
Odegaard and Gyokeres did make appearances off the bench during the second half against Chelsea.
“Overall, it’s been a really positive week considering the immense difficulties we faced,” Arteta continued. “However, I have this feeling that we should have won today, and that’s something we can learn from.”
Arsenal's Defensive Challenges Continue Without Key Players
The match against Chelsea marked only the second occasion since August 2021 that neither Gabriel Magalhaes nor Saliba featured in Arsenal's Premier League lineup.
Both players are integral to the Gunners' defensive structure and play significant roles in attacking set-pieces. Their absence was felt, as Arsenal's typically effective long throws, free-kicks, and corners lacked their usual impact.
Chelsea's opening goal from Trevoh Chalobah came from a corner, which was particularly disappointing for Arteta and set-piece coach Nicolas Jover.
“It’s been a headache,” Arteta admitted. “We’ve had to make numerous adjustments in recent months for various reasons. Saliba's injury was unexpected and occurred just yesterday.”
Arteta named Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie as his center-back pairing for the first time in the Premier League. “The beauty of it is that we have players eager to step up and connect with each other. We will build an even better relationship,” he noted.
“Today was a valuable learning experience for all of us and assures that whoever steps in will perform.” Arteta confirmed that it would take “weeks” before Gabriel could return to the first team.
