Ollie Watkins continued his resurgence as Aston Villa rebounded from a recent defeat, capitalizing on Nottingham Forest's mistakes.
The England striker's fourth goal in three matches contributed to Villa's impressive 11th consecutive home victory, marking their best run in 36 years. This win served as a perfect response to their recent loss against Arsenal.
John McGinn's brace propelled Villa to second place in the Premier League, putting them 12 points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea, despite Morgan Gibbs-White managing to pull one back for Forest.
The defeat marked Nottingham Forest's fourth consecutive league loss, a streak that has not been seen in over two years and has led to the dismissal of manager Steve Cooper.
Sean Dyche's side now sits four points above the relegation zone and will face a critical match against third-bottom West Ham on Tuesday, reuniting with former manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
Aside from an effort from Omari Hutchinson, Dyche's team rarely posed a threat and could have found themselves behind early on if not for John Victor's brilliant save against Watkins.
However, Watkins, who had scored only once in his first 19 games this season, struck from 20 yards in first-half stoppage time. McGinn then doubled the lead shortly after the break.
Gibbs-White coolly reduced the deficit to 2-1, but goalkeeper John’s error allowed McGinn to restore Villa's two-goal advantage with a long-range effort into an empty net.
Nottingham Forest Analysis: Warning Signs for Forest and Dyche
At this time last year, Forest was positioned third in the Premier League, appearing to be strong contenders for Champions League qualification.
Fast forward a year, and they risk slipping back into the bottom three by Tuesday evening.
Prior to the match, manager Dyche remarked that Forest's current form can mislead perceptions. He pointed out that Crystal Palace and Sunderland have only accumulated one more point (seven) than Forest in their last six games, suggesting that their situation may not be as dire.
However, after a fourth consecutive defeat, the possibility of Nuno returning to haunt them at West Ham is becoming increasingly likely.
The loss at Villa Park was careless, and Forest must confront the reality of their situation. They need to regain the form and organization that enabled Dyche to secure seven wins in his first 12 games across all competitions.
