Atletico Madrid Triumphs Over Real Madrid in Thrilling Derby
Atletico Madrid staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Real Madrid for the first time this season in a thrilling Madrid derby.
Diego Simeone's team initially took the lead with an early header from Robin le Normand, but Real Madrid quickly responded with stunning goals from Kylian Mbappe and Arda Guler.
However, Alexander Sorloth equalized in stoppage time at the end of the first half, bringing the score to 2-2.
After the break, Atletico seized control when Julian Alvarez, who had previously struck the post, converted a penalty and later scored a magnificent free-kick.
Despite retreating into a defensive stance, Atletico successfully kept their rivals at bay until Antoine Griezmann capped off the match with a fifth goal deep into stoppage time.
This defeat ended Real Madrid's impressive streak of seven consecutive victories across La Liga and the Champions League, although they remained two points ahead of Barcelona at the top of La Liga.
Atletico's victory also reinforced their strong record against Real in La Liga, as they have not lost in their last six league meetings with their cross-city rivals.
The match began with Atletico asserting their dominance, and they were rewarded when Le Normand headed in a cross from Giuliano Simeone, slipping the ball through goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois's hands.
Real Madrid equalized when Mbappe netted his eighth goal of the season, sliding a shot past goalkeeper Jan Oblak after receiving a perfectly timed pass from Guler.
Guler then put Real ahead with a stylish half-volley from a Vinicius Junior cross, but Atletico quickly responded, with Alvarez hitting the post just moments later.
The first half continued to be action-packed, with Atletico having a goal from Clement Lenglet disallowed for handball before Sorloth found the net with a header from Koke's exquisite cross.
The tide turned decisively in Atletico's favor early in the second half when Guler fouled Nico Gonzalez at a corner, resulting in a penalty. Alvarez, who had recently scored a hat-trick in a win over Rayo Vallecano, calmly converted the penalty and then extended the lead with a superb free-kick over the wall and past Courtois.
Despite a series of substitutions from coach Xabi Alonso, Real Madrid struggled to threaten Atletico's defense until the hosts sealed their victory with a fifth goal. Alex Baena intercepted a loose pass in midfield and released Griezmann, who skillfully navigated into the penalty area before rolling the ball past Courtois.
Looking ahead, both teams will shift their focus to the Champions League, with matches scheduled for Tuesday, October 1. Real Madrid will travel to Kazakhstan to face Kairat Almaty, while Atletico Madrid will host Eintracht Frankfurt.
