Brennan Johnson Shines in Wales' 7-1 Victory Over North Macedonia
Brennan Johnson expressed that he always feels a need to prove himself after delivering an impressive performance that led Wales to a resounding 7-1 victory against North Macedonia in Cardiff.
The Tottenham Hotspur forward scored his seventh international goal in spectacular fashion, helping Craig Bellamy's side secure a home play-off semi-final ahead of next year's World Cup by finishing second in their qualifying group.
At 24, Johnson is Wales' most expensive player, having transferred to Spurs for a substantial fee of £50 million from Nottingham Forest in 2023.
Following his standout display in the red jersey at Cardiff City Stadium, the winger acknowledged the pressure he places on himself to perform at the highest level. "I think I always feel like I have a point to prove. I'm someone who can be quite tough on myself," he told BBC Match of the Day Wales. "I just always want to go out and perform my best."
Before scoring, Johnson wreaked havoc on the left wing, providing a cross to David Brooks, who netted Wales' second goal against Blagoja Milevski's team.
Former Wales midfielder Joe Ledley noted that Johnson "had a real spring in his step," while ex-international teammate Ashley Williams praised the 42-cap forward's performance. "From the start, Brennan Johnson looked much more positive than he has in recent games. You could sense he needed a big moment," Williams commented. "People were questioning whether he should start, and I think he answered that today. The price tag on his head is irrelevant. You could see from his celebration that the goal meant a lot to him."
Speaking to BBC Radio Cymru, former Wales striker Iwan Roberts remarked, "I think that’s the best we’ve seen from Brennan Johnson in the red shirt of Wales. He scored a great goal."
Johnson played a crucial role in Wales' attacking line, joining hat-trick hero Harry Wilson, David Brooks, and Dan James, as Bellamy's team achieved their biggest win since 1978.
Wales will face either Albania, Bosnia, Kosovo, or the Republic of Ireland at Cardiff City Stadium in the play-off semi-finals on March 26. A draw will determine whether Wales will play at home or away in the final, with potential opponents including Italy, Denmark, Turkey, Ukraine, Northern Ireland, North Macedonia, Romania, and Sweden, should they progress to the pivotal fixture on March 31.
Regarding the advantage of playing at home in the upcoming matches, Johnson stated, "It means a lot. You only have to look at the last two play-offs (for World Cup 2022 and Euro 2024), all at home, and I think it made a massive impact on the games. We won both semi-finals (against Austria and Finland) and lost on penalties to Poland. It was something definitely mentioned going into the game. We already had the play-offs secured, but we wanted the home draw."
