Brentford Triumphs Over Sunderland as Igor Thiago Shines with Two Goals
Igor Thiago scored twice to continue his impressive form as Brentford decisively defeated Sunderland at Gtech Community Stadium.
Thiago's brace follows his hat-trick against Everton on Sunday, bringing his total to 16 league goals for the season—the highest by a Brazilian in a single Premier League campaign.
He opened the scoring after half an hour, skillfully rounding Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs. Thiago then doubled Brentford's advantage in the 65th minute, heading in from six yards after Kevin Schade had redirected a deep cross back into the box.
Yehor Yarmoliuk secured the points for Brentford eight minutes later with a well-placed shot from close range following a corner kick.
Sunderland had a significant chance to equalize early in the second half when Brian Brobbey was fouled in the penalty area. However, midfielder Enzo Le Fee's attempt to chip the ball down the middle was easily caught by Bees goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who remained stationary.
This missed opportunity proved costly, as Keith Andrews' side quickly regained control of the match to secure a well-deserved victory.
Brentford's fourth win in their last five matches extends their unbeaten streak to six games, enhancing their prospects for European qualification.
Conversely, Sunderland faced their first defeat in six matches and have managed to win only one of their last seven outings.
