Brighton Overcomes Chelsea in Dramatic Comeback
Brighton & Hove Albion staged a remarkable comeback to defeat a poorly disciplined Chelsea side, which saw a player sent off for the second consecutive Saturday.
Substitutes Danny Welbeck and Maxim de Cuyper both scored during an intense 11 minutes of added time, capitalizing on Trevoh Chalobah's red card in the 53rd minute.
Chelsea had taken the lead in the first half when Enzo Fernandez headed in Reece James's cross, which was deflected off Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma.
However, Mitoma played a crucial role in the game's pivotal moment by regaining possession from Chelsea's Andrey Santos, who was making his first Premier League start. This led to Chalobah's desperate challenge on Georginio Rutter.
After a lengthy review by the video assistant referee, Chalobah was sent off—just a week after goalkeeper Robert Sanchez received a red card early in their 2-1 defeat against Manchester United.
Welbeck took full advantage by scoring twice; he netted the equalizer with a header at the far post shortly after coming on in the 77th minute.
De Cuyper then headed Brighton in front from a corner in the second minute of stoppage time, and Welbeck sealed the victory with a close-range finish in the ninth minute of stoppage time.
Chelsea, who have now dropped to seventh place, left the field to a chorus of boos. The team has not won a Premier League match since the international break, with Liverpool set to visit west London next.
Meanwhile, Brighton climbed to 10th place following another impressive result against a top-six opponent.
