Bruno Fernandes Reflects on Al-Hilal's Offer and Commitment to Manchester United
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes revealed that it was painful to learn that the club was open to his departure when Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal made a substantial offer during the summer transfer window.
The 31-year-old Portugal international turned down the chance to join the Saudi Pro League, despite Al-Hilal reportedly willing to pay around £100 million and offer wages of up to £700,000 per week.
Fernandes is under contract with Manchester United until 2027, with an option for an additional year.
In October, prior to his 300th appearance for the club, he stated that he would not discuss his future until after the next year's World Cup.
Reflecting on Al-Hilal's interest in a recent interview, he said, "From the club, I felt it was, 'If you go, it's not so bad for us.' It hurts me a bit." The comments were made during an interview with Canal 11, a channel owned by the Portuguese Football Federation.
"More than hurting me, it makes me sad," Fernandes added. "I'm a player that no one can criticize; I'm always available, and I always give my best. I could have left in this transfer window and earned significantly more money. I could have won many trophies this season, but I chose to stay, not only for family reasons but also because I genuinely love the club."
Fernandes joined Manchester United in January 2020 from Sporting Lisbon for £47 million and has since made 307 appearances, scoring 103 goals and providing 93 assists.
This season, he has recorded five goals and seven assists in the Premier League, including a stunning free-kick and an assist in Monday's 4-4 draw against Bournemouth.
In June, Fernandes mentioned that one of the reasons he declined Al-Hilal's offer was his desire to continue playing at the highest level, with United manager Ruben Amorim encouraging him to remain at Old Trafford.
However, Fernandes stated, "The club wanted me to leave. I told the directors that; I think they didn't have the courage to make that decision because the manager wanted me. But if I had said I wanted to leave, even with the manager wanting me to stay, the club would have let me go." Sources have informed BBC Sport that Manchester United does not wish to sell Fernandes and considers him integral to the club's long-term strategy.
