Celtic Manager Brendan Rodgers Expresses Hope for Squad Additions
Brendan Rodgers expressed optimism on Thursday regarding potential additions to his Celtic squad.
This statement comes just six days after he remarked that there was "no news" on possible new signings, following a week of frustration over inactivity in the transfer market.
It is understandable that the Northern Irish manager may find the ongoing inquiries somewhat taxing.
His patience appeared to wane following Celtic's routine 4-1 victory over Falkirk in the Premier Sports Cup, as he repeatedly responded with "I don’t know" during a tense interview with BBC Scotland.
As former Celtic goalkeeper Pat Bonner noted on Sportsound, this agitation is typical for this time of year.
This period is marked by the impending closure of transfer windows, the looming Champions League playoffs, and the anticipation from fans and managers alike for new signings to bolster their hopes for the season ahead.
What transpired during the exchange? What transfers have Celtic completed so far? And where might they still require reinforcements?
Details of the Exchange
BBC Scotland's Alasdair Lamont conducted an interview with Rodgers before the match and followed up with him afterwards.
Once the conversation shifted from the match result to transfers, the focus was on whether any new signings might be available in time for the crucial match against Kairat Almaty.
"You’ve had to name a squad for the Champions League deadline, but you are allowed to name two additional players before the game. Do you foresee any likelihood of adding players to that squad?"
Rodgers: "I don’t know. I’ve just come out here after the game, so we’ll wait and see. We’ve named the squad, and we’ll see what happens before the game. If not, that’s the squad we’re going with."
"Can you remain optimistic about it? There must be developments in the pipeline that you think could go one way or another."
Rodgers: "Let me reiterate, I’ve just finished the game. I haven’t informed you of anything before or during the match. I don’t know anything. So there may be signings, or there may not be. We have the team that we have."
"Okay. Thank you, Brendan."
Current Transfer Activity
Celtic has secured four new players this summer: Benjamin Nygren from Nordsjaelland, Hayato Inamura from Albirex Niigata, Shin Yamada from Kawasaki Frontale, and Callum Osmand from Fulham.
Of these, Nygren appears to be the only likely candidate for a starting position.
However, with Jota sidelined due to injury until the end of the year and Nicolas Kuhn transferred to Como, Celtic currently lacks depth in the winger position.
Rodgers is also seeking a replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi, sold in January, while Yamada has made only two brief appearances as a substitute, and Osmand is currently playing with Celtic's B team.
Additionally, 19-year-old Jahmai Simpson-Pusey has yet to make an appearance since joining on loan from Manchester City, and fellow center-back Inamura has also not played.
Kieran Tierney was a notable free transfer from Arsenal, but with Scotland international Greg Taylor moving to PAOK and Jeffrey Schlupp leaving after his loan, Celtic still requires additional cover at left-back.
Areas of Need
In a post-match interview, Rodgers adopted a more measured tone, indicating that the assessment of Celtic's summer transfer activity should wait until the window closes on Monday, September 1.
With more than two weeks remaining, there is still time for potential signings.
At this point last season, players like Auston Trusty, Arne Engels, and Luke McCowan had not yet joined, and Adam Idah was still holding up a scarf.
"Of course, I would have preferred to have more players in," Rodgers stated on Premier Sports. "We need reinforcements, but I don’t want to keep dwelling on it. I don’t need to beg for the players we require."
So, who are these players, or rather, which positions does Celtic need to address?
Bonner highlighted the need for backup for influential captain Callum McGregor in midfield and raised concerns about the lack of options at left-back to support Tierney.
However, his main focus is on strengthening the forward line.
"We still need to find a striker who can consistently score goals," he noted. "Johnny Kenny played tonight but didn’t manage a shot on target despite numerous crosses. Shin Yamada came on with limited opportunities. Perhaps it’s simply a reflection of Celtic’s playing style. Are they adequately equipped in the wide positions? They substituted James Forrest for Nygren, who typically plays inside rather than wide. This is another question that remains to be answered."
