Charlton Athletic Secures Victory Against Blackburn Rovers
Charlton Athletic achieved their second consecutive victory, further deepening the woes of Blackburn Rovers.
The Addicks took the lead at halftime with a header from Macaulay Gillesphey, but the anticipated fightback from Blackburn failed to materialize in the second half.
Following a disappointing week that included the EFL's decision to replay last weekend's abandoned match against Ipswich Town—after leading with just ten minutes remaining—Rovers struggled to compete at The Valley.
Sonny Carey emphasized the home side's dominance with a powerful 25-yard strike, and James Bree added a late third goal, marking a strong follow-up to their previous win against Sheffield United.
Fans of Blackburn, making the long journey to South London in hopes of seeing their team channel their frustrations into a performance against the Championship newcomers, were left disappointed once again.
The fighting spirit and attractive football that had seen them take the lead against Ipswich were noticeably absent against a resilient Charlton side, which is eager to build on their recent success.
Having ended a four-match winless streak, Nathan Jones' team appears to be finding their rhythm after earning promotion through the League One play-offs.
The opening half-hour was characterized by a scrappy and combative atmosphere, with neither side threatening to score. However, Bree's skillful right foot, which troubled Blackburn throughout the match, eventually created an opportunity.
His free-kick found Gillesphey, who directed his header past goalkeeper Balazs Toth, giving the home team a slender lead.
Toth was forced to make a sharp save to deny a header from Lloyd Jones in added time, keeping Blackburn in the match, but the lack of a response from Rovers in the second half will be a cause for concern for manager Valerien Ismael.
Blackburn's Todd Cantwell had a penalty appeal when his cross struck Jones on the arm, but referee Anthony Backhouse dismissed the claims, determining that the arm was not in an unnatural position.
As the second half progressed, Charlton grew stronger. Substitute Isaac Olaofe held up the ball and laid it off to Carey, who was afforded too much time and space to unleash a shot that flew between Toth and his near post.
Olaofe, who scored the decisive goal in South Yorkshire the previous week, was instrumental in creating the third goal in the fourth minute of added time. He sprinted down the left flank and set up Greg Docherty, whose pull-back found Bree, who calmly placed a side-footed shot through a crowd of players into the net.
Referee's Decisions Draw Criticism
Blackburn head coach Valerien Ismael expressed his frustration to BBC Radio Lancashire:
"We had some good moments at the beginning, but we were inconsistent, and the overall performance was lacking, though I'm not sure why.
"We conceded a goal from a set-piece, but the positive was that we were only down by one at halftime.
"Then came a crucial moment; I believe it’s terrible that the referee missed the handball by Lloyd Jones, as it could have changed the game.
"What’s particularly embarrassing is that our captain was allowed to speak to the referee, who responded by winking and laughing. This is unacceptable. He made a mistake, but he should treat our players with respect.
"It’s been a tough week, but we have a quick turnaround with a game on Tuesday."
