Chicago Fire in Talks with Robert Lewandowski for MLS Move
Chicago Fire has engaged in positive discussions with Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski regarding a potential move to Major League Soccer.
The Polish record scorer's contract at Spotify Camp Nou expires at the end of the season, and the Fire are keen to secure the 37-year-old's services next summer.
Sources have informed BBC Sport that Lewandowski is receptive to the idea of joining the MLS, and his salary is not anticipated to be a barrier.
While he has other options, including remaining at Barcelona or transferring to the Saudi Pro League, a move to the MLS remains a strong possibility.
Chicago Fire, who qualified for the MLS playoffs this season for the first time since 2017, have placed Lewandowski on their 'discovery list.' This designation prevents other teams in the league from signing him without compensating the Fire.
Inter Miami has also expressed interest, but they cannot negotiate with Lewandowski while he is on the Fire's discovery list, positioning Chicago as the frontrunner if he chooses to continue his career in the United States.
Lionel Messi's Inter Miami has an available designated player spot following the retirement of Jordi Alba, which came after their first-ever MLS Cup victory against Vancouver earlier this month.
Chicago Fire has prioritized Lewandowski for at least six months, a strategic decision given that Chicago is home to the largest Polish community in the United States.
Last month, Lewandowski's wife, Anna, visited Chicago while they were in the States.
Since joining Barcelona in 2022 on a four-year contract, Lewandowski has scored 109 goals in 164 appearances, winning La Liga twice. This season, he has netted eight goals in 17 matches, contributing to his team's four-point lead at the top of La Liga.
