Coleraine Secures Spot in Irish Cup Sixth Round with Dominant Victory
Coleraine secured their place in the sixth round of the Irish Cup with a decisive 4-0 victory over 10-man Crusaders at the Showgrounds.
Brendan Hamilton was sent off early in the second half, leading to Mark Connolly opening the scoring from a resulting free-kick.
Will Patching and James Akintunde scored in quick succession, while Joel Cooper capped off the scoring with a fourth goal for the Bannsiders.
The home team began the match with a strong performance, but it was the visiting Crusaders who had the best opportunity in the opening quarter.
Dylan Boyle's wayward back pass put his teammate Connolly in a difficult position, allowing Crusaders forward Elliott Dunlop to seize on the loose ball.
Dunlop advanced and unleashed a low shot that Coleraine goalkeeper Ryan Schofield managed to save at his near post.
At the other end, Cooper threatened on several occasions, while Patching's free-kick was comfortably handled by Crusaders goalkeeper Musa Dibaga.
Patching was denied again shortly after, as Dibaga made a diving save to his left following impressive play from Matthew Shevlin down the left flank.
Coleraine broke the deadlock just two minutes after the restart, with Connolly scoring his first goal for the club following Hamilton's dismissal.
The Crusaders defender, who had been booked in the first half for a foul on Zane Okoro, received a second yellow card for a similar infringement.
Ben Wylie delivered a cross from the resulting free-kick, and Connolly was perfectly positioned at the back post to power a header past Dibaga into the roof of the net.
The home side doubled their lead shortly after the hour mark when Patching displayed great awareness to curl a superb free-kick from the edge of the penalty area, completely outsmarting the Crusaders keeper.
Akintunde made it 3-0 just two minutes later, rifling home at the second attempt after the visiting defense failed to clear the ball effectively.
Cooper then raced clear of the Crusaders defense to slot the ball low past the goalkeeper 11 minutes before the final whistle.
The remaining 15 fifth-round ties are scheduled to take place on Saturday.
