Coventry City last competed in the Premier League during the 2000-01 season. The Sky Blues finished in 19th place, accumulating 34 points over the course of 38 matches. They were relegated to the Championship after falling just eight points short of safety, alongside Manchester City and Bradford City. This marked the end of a remarkable 34-year tenure in the top flight, which spanned from 1967 to 2001.

What happened to Coventry after relegation?
Following their relegation from the Premier League, Coventry spent the next 11 years in the Championship. In the 2011-12 season, they were relegated to League One and subsequently dropped to League Two in the 2016-17 season, only to secure promotion the following year. The Sky Blues returned to the Championship in 2020 after being crowned League One champions.
In the 2023-24 season, Coventry reached the FA Cup semi-final but were narrowly defeated by Manchester United in a penalty shootout. The team came close to a Premier League return in 2023, reaching the Championship play-off final, only to lose to Luton Town on penalties. They also reached the Championship play-off semi-final in 2025, where they were eliminated by Sunderland.
Since their relegation in 2001, Coventry has seen 14 different managers at the helm. The current head coach, Frank Lampard, a former England and Chelsea captain, took charge in November 2024 and led his team to a fifth-place finish last season.
How likely is it for Coventry to return to the Premier League?
This season, Coventry's performance has positioned them favorably for direct promotion to the Premier League, as they currently sit at the top of the Championship table, 10 points ahead of second-place Stoke City. According to Opta's supercomputer, Coventry is heavily favored to win the Championship title, with an 85% likelihood of achieving this goal.
They also hold the highest probability of securing automatic promotion to the Premier League—achieved by finishing either first or second—predicted at 94.9%. Conversely, there is only a 4.7% chance that Coventry will find themselves in the promotion play-offs.
