Cristian Romero Signs New Four-Year Contract with Tottenham Hotspur
Cristian Romero, captain of Tottenham Hotspur, has officially signed a new four-year contract, securing his future with the club.
The 27-year-old Argentine centre-back joined Spurs from Atalanta in August 2021, initially arriving on loan before completing a permanent transfer the following summer.
Since his arrival, Romero has made 126 appearances for Tottenham, scoring eight goals. Notably, he captained the team during the Europa League final, where Spurs triumphed over Manchester United, ending a 17-year trophy drought.
Despite significant speculation linking him to a move to Atletico Madrid during the summer transfer window, Romero was appointed as club captain by new head coach Thomas Frank. This new contract ensures that he will remain with the club in north London until 2029.
Romero, a former Belgrano defender, had two years remaining on his previous contract and now joins right-back Djed Spence in committing to a long-term future with Spurs.
Spence, 25, who joined from Middlesbrough in 2022, faced challenges at the start of his Tottenham career, spending loan spells at Rennes, Leeds, and Genoa. However, he emerged as a key player under manager Ange Postecoglou last season, making 42 appearances and scoring twice. Spence's previous contract was set to expire in 2028.
