Crystal Palace Faces Disappointment in European Debut Against AEK Larnaca
Crystal Palace's first home match in a major European competition ended in disappointment as they suffered a surprising defeat to AEK Larnaca in the UEFA Conference League at Selhurst Park.
The Cypriot Cup winners took the lead in the 51st minute when Palace defender Jaydee Canvot made a critical error, gifting the ball to Marcus Rohden. Rohden then set up Riad Bajic, who scored with a powerful finish.
In front of an eager home crowd, Palace had been in control prior to the goal. Striker Jean-Philippe Mateta came close to scoring, hitting the crossbar with a hooked volley from close range during the first half.
Mateta also narrowly missed with a header from a free-kick just before halftime and was denied by a remarkable save from AEK Larnaca goalkeeper Zlatan Alomerovic in the 70th minute, when he was at point-blank range.
Substitute Eddie Nketiah had a chance to equalize late in the game but failed to convert from five yards out, missing a loose ball.
Despite having a strong starting lineup and finishing the match on top in terms of possession, Palace could not penetrate Larnaca's resolute defense, allowing the visitors to secure their second victory in the competition.
