Egypt Advances to Afcon Semifinals with Victory Over Ivory Coast
Mohamed Salah found the net once again as Egypt triumphed over defending champions Ivory Coast in a thrilling quarter-final match at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
The Pharaohs took an early lead when Omar Marmoush scored just four minutes into the match, setting the tone for the game as Egypt remained in control.
Despite falling behind, Ivory Coast, known for their tenacity, fought back. Ramy Rabia doubled Egypt's advantage with a header shortly after the half-hour mark, but the Elephants responded with an own goal from Ahmed Fatouh, giving them a glimmer of hope before the break.
Salah quickly reestablished a two-goal cushion for Egypt, ensuring their lead was secure heading into the second half.
A backheeled goal from Guela Doue in the 73rd minute ignited hopes of a comeback for Ivory Coast, but they were unable to complete the turnaround.
This victory keeps Salah's hopes alive for securing his first continental title with the national team.
Next, Egypt will face Senegal in Tangier on Wednesday at 17:00 GMT, a rematch following their defeat in the 2021 final.
