Egypt's World Cup Qualification Hopes Diminished After Draw
Egypt's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dashed as they played to a 0-0 draw against Burkina Faso, missing the opportunity to secure their advancement with two matches remaining.
In an attempt to join North African rivals Morocco and Tunisia in securing early qualification, Egypt believed they had taken the lead in the 66th minute. However, Osama Faisal's goal was disallowed for offside.
The match, held in Ouagadougou, saw few scoring opportunities. Faisal, a substitute, capitalized on a knockdown from team captain and Liverpool star Mohamed Salah, but the goal was quickly ruled out by the linesman.
Egypt's performance was further hindered by an early injury to Omar Marmoush. The forward, who limped off after just nine minutes, raises concerns for Manchester City as they prepare for an upcoming derby in the Premier League.
Both Marmoush and Salah had previously converted penalties in a 2-0 victory over Ethiopia in Cairo, setting the stage for this critical match against Burkina Faso. However, the Pharaohs struggled to create significant threats from open play, ultimately failing to score for the first time in Group A despite fielding both Salah and Trezeguet, who together accounted for 12 of Egypt's 16 qualifying goals. Trezeguet recorded the only two shots on target during the match.
Burkina Faso Maintain Slim World Cup Hopes
With the draw, Burkina Faso clings to their faint hopes of reaching the World Cup, remaining five points behind the group leaders. This match marked their first home game of the qualifying campaign following renovations to their national stadium.
Burkina Faso came close to scoring with headers in both halves, as Edmond Tapsoba sent one just over the bar early in the match, and Dango Ouattara missed a late opportunity.
Egypt's coach Hossam Hassan had hoped to celebrate qualification in a stadium where he has fond memories, having led the Pharaohs to victory in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1998. Instead, he witnessed his team drop points for only the second time in the group stage.
For Burkina Faso to have any chance of qualifying for the World Cup, they must secure victories against Sierra Leone and Ethiopia next month. However, their chances appear slim as Egypt would also need to lose to two of the group's bottom teams, Djibouti and Guinea-Bissau.
Despite their impressive record of seven Africa Cup of Nations titles, Egypt has struggled to replicate that success in World Cup qualifying, having participated in the tournament only three times: in 1934, 1990, and 2018.
