Northern Ireland manager Michael O'Neill believes that the recent criticism faced by Germany will provide them with "extra motivation" in their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifier in Cologne on Sunday. Germany, under coach Julian Nagelsmann, has suffered three consecutive defeats, including a surprising 2-0 loss to Slovakia, marking their first-ever away defeat in a World Cup qualifier.
This disappointing result has led to significant backlash in Germany. However, O'Neill argues that the pressure of scrutiny will not necessarily make the match easier for his team. "The German national team always plays under pressure due to high expectations, and these players are accustomed to handling it. The coach has experience at a very high level, so he is familiar with such pressures as well," he stated.
O'Neill acknowledged that criticism can feel more personal for national team players than for those at the club level, adding, "Everyone wants to perform well for their national team and their families. I haven't followed the criticism closely, but if Germany needs extra motivation, they will find it there."
Germany's recent quarter-final defeat to Spain at Euro 2024 marked the end of the international careers for notable players such as Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer, and Thomas Muller. Despite this loss of experience, the team still features seasoned players like Joshua Kimmich and Antonio Rudiger. When asked if he still considers Germany a footballing "heavyweight," O'Neill responded, "They have lost some exceptional players like Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller in recent years. This presents a challenge, and they may not have the same depth as before. Historically, they could compensate for key player absences, but their current squad still boasts talents from top clubs like Bayern Munich, Liverpool, and RB Leipzig, which justifies their heavyweight status in European football."
In contrast, Northern Ireland approaches the match with considerably lower expectations. After starting their campaign with a 3-1 victory over Luxembourg, O'Neill expressed that a positive outcome in Cologne would elevate their trip from good to great. However, he dismissed the idea that Sunday’s match could be viewed as a "free hit" for his team. "I don’t consider any football match a free hit. Instead, it’s an opportunity for us," he explained. "Given our current team dynamics and the chance to face one of the powerhouses of European football, we have everything to gain. We acknowledge that we are up against an exceptionally good side that is likely to respond after their recent loss. Considering our squad's age and experience, this match is a fantastic opportunity for us to embrace and hopefully gain something from it."
