England Aims for Clean Sheet Record Against Albania
England manager Thomas Tuchel has not discussed the potential World Cup qualifying record with his players ahead of their match against Albania on Sunday.
If Tuchel's team secures a victory and maintains a clean sheet, they will become the first European team to win all their qualifiers without conceding a goal.
With their place in next year's World Cup already secured, Tuchel's focus remains on preparing for the tournament to be held in the US, Canada, and Mexico.
"I haven't mentioned it at all," Tuchel stated when asked if he was using the potential achievement as motivation for England's final qualifier.
"We need to establish a solid foundation to have a chance at these records. Simply thinking or talking about it won't change anything. We need to perform again. The trust and confidence are absolutely present, as I have witnessed during our camp. I trust my players to deliver once more."
Regardless of the outcome on Sunday, Albania will finish second in the group and enter the World Cup play-offs.
Despite the lack of stakes on paper, Tuchel emphasized that his players are exhibiting the motivation and determination he desires.
"We ensured that our training session yesterday was productive. The quality and mentality of those who didn't play were exceptional, which was a pleasure to observe and be part of," he remarked. "It demonstrated to me that we are progressing in the right direction. Everyone is ready to play and eager to start. The competition remains fierce, and the hunger to be on the pitch tomorrow is paramount."
This match against Albania will be England's last of the year, with only one more international break remaining before Tuchel names his squad for the World Cup next summer.
Tuchel hopes for a performance that reflects the growth the team has made since he officially took charge in January. "Overall, I sense that our desire to win and achieve something outweighs the fear of losing or potentially missing out on a clean sheet record," he said.
"These things happen naturally. We are aware that our clean sheets result from our collective defensive effort, and while we need a bit of luck at times, we should focus less on what we have to lose and more on the opportunity to showcase our quality in another exciting and intense match."
'Not conceding is great motivation'
England captain Harry Kane expressed that remaining unbeaten without conceding provides additional motivation for the players. "The final game in an England shirt for the year is always crucial for maintaining momentum," the 32-year-old said.
"We understand that we are qualified and that Albania is headed to the play-offs, but the fact that we haven't conceded is a significant motivation. Achieving no goals conceded throughout the campaign would be a remarkable accomplishment."
Kane emphasized the importance of reaching their peak performance, stating, "If we perform at our best, we believe we can defeat any team in the world, regardless of the opposition."
