Erling Haaland's Record-Breaking Performance Propels Manchester City
Erling Haaland is setting new benchmarks as he continues to shatter his own records.
Only three players have reached double figures in the Premier League by their eighth appearance in a season: Erling Haaland in 2022-23, 2024-25, and 2025-26.
The 25-year-old's impressive brace against Everton propelled Manchester City to the top of the Premier League on Saturday, at least until Arsenal faced Fulham, bringing his total to 11 league goals in just eight games this season.
Haaland was quiet in the first half, failing to register a shot on goal, but he came alive after the break, scoring with a header from Nico O'Reilly's cross and finishing off Savinho's cutback.
Everton's manager, David Moyes, approached Haaland at full-time and, when asked about their conversation, said, "I wish he had been somewhere else! Most managers will be thinking the same." He acknowledged his team's efforts but noted, "How can you say that? He scored two goals. The second one was a bit scruffy, and we had not given him too many opportunities. Our goalkeeper deserves great credit for how he defended against Haaland one-on-one as we opened up trying to find a goal."
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised his record-breaking striker, stating, "Sergio [Aguero] scored many goals with his head, but Erling's physical presence is immense. I am delighted not only for the threat he poses to opponents but also for how we utilized him more in the second half. That is crucial; when you have players like him, you need to take advantage of their capabilities. Erling lives for this game. Our passing has improved, and he is currently our key player."
Haaland: A Phenomenon
It can be challenging to find new ways to describe Haaland's goal-scoring prowess, but his numbers this season are remarkable. He has participated in 13 matches for club and country, scoring a total of 23 goals, including eight for Norway in World Cup qualifying, bringing his nation close to securing a place in next year's tournament.
By mid-October, Haaland had netted 14 goals for City in the league and Champions League, having only failed to score in a match against Tottenham in August. To break Dixie Dean's record of 63 goals in all competitions—set nearly a century ago by an English top-flight player—Haaland must maintain this scoring rate.
Last season, he came close to breaking that record with 52 goals, helping City achieve a treble, followed by 38 and 34 goals in the subsequent seasons.
Former Chelsea winger Pat Nevin remarked on BBC Radio 5 Live, "The man is an absolute phenomenon. He appeared somewhat disinterested in the game, and we hardly mentioned his name. Yet when the ball found him twice, you never doubted it would end up in the net. When Haaland is at his best, he looks like a grown man playing among children. He has regained that edge, with defenders bouncing off him; his pace is extraordinary, and he appears superhuman. He is alive again."
Former Premier League striker Glenn Murray added on Final Score, "The frightening aspect is that he has become a more complete player this season. He is a better footballer now than when he first arrived at Manchester City, scoring all those goals. His overall game has improved significantly."
Others Must Step Up
However, Manchester City must be cautious not to become overly reliant on their prolific striker, who has scored 13 of their 17 league goals this season. Phil Foden, Matheus Nunes, Tijjani Reijnders, and Rayan Cherki have each managed to score once.
Haaland missed a significant portion of last season due to an ankle injury, and this absence, along with injuries to other key players like Rodri, hindered their campaign. Guardiola now emphasizes the need for other players to contribute to the scoring efforts.
"I’m disappointed he didn’t score four or five," Guardiola told BBC Match of the Day. "All jokes aside, I’m really pleased, but we cannot rely solely on him; we need other players to score, including wingers and attacking midfielders. They must step up and convert the chances created. At this level, they need to hold themselves accountable. Opportunities from Savinho, Jeremy [Doku], and Tijjani [Reijnders] need to be taken. If not, we can't achieve our goals."
City briefly ascended to the top of the table before Arsenal played Fulham, with Guardiola noting that his side would "sleep in the Champions League position this weekend, so that is good." After a rocky start to the season with two losses in their opening three Premier League matches, things are currently looking up for the team.
