Erling Haaland Sets Premier League Record with Unmatched Goal Scoring
Erling Haaland's recent goal against Brighton in the Premier League has allowed him to set a new record, scoring 88 goals in his first 100 games, the highest tally for any player in that span.
The Norwegian striker has also increased his international record to 46 goals in 45 matches, thanks to a first-half hat-trick against Moldova on Tuesday.
With such an extraordinary goal-scoring record, it is only natural to regard the Manchester City forward as an exceptional finisher. However, it is not solely his finishing ability that makes him a remarkable goal-scorer.
Considering the number and quality of chances Haaland has received since joining the Premier League in 2022, an average player would historically have scored about 84 goals. This indicates that Haaland's finishing, while above average, only accounts for four of his impressive total (and just two if penalties are excluded).
This trend holds true for other top scorers in the Premier League during the same period, as the ability of players like Mohamed Salah and Ollie Watkins to consistently create opportunities has been crucial to their goal tallies.
Critics of Haaland may argue that anyone could score numerous goals playing for Manchester City. However, this perspective overlooks the fact that no other player can generate as many high-quality chances as Haaland, due to his unique combination of strength, speed, and height.
Moreover, Haaland's exceptional movement, anticipation, and reflexes make him a nightmare for defenders. While playing under Pep Guardiola undoubtedly provides him with excellent service from teammates, a comparison with another world-class striker at City, Sergio Aguero, highlights Haaland's ability to create superior scoring opportunities.
Despite Aguero taking more shots than Haaland, he did not score as many goals, and their shot conversion rates suggest that Haaland is more clinical. However, when considering the quality of their shots, Aguero had a slightly better finishing rate, converting 2% more of his chances than the historical average. Nevertheless, Haaland consistently crafts better chances, making him the more effective goal-scorer overall.
Examining the top forwards in Europe’s leading leagues since Haaland joined City, it becomes evident that most players must choose between taking numerous lower-quality shots, like Kylian Mbappe of Real Madrid, or fewer high-quality ones, such as Serhou Guirassy of Dortmund. Haaland, however, manages to take a high volume of shots without sacrificing quality.
The only players who match this ability are Goncalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain, who often capitalizes on tired defenses as a substitute, and Robert Lewandowski of Barcelona, who is widely regarded as the greatest striker of the past decade.
Haaland’s knack for consistently generating excellent scoring opportunities is so remarkable that other world-class forwards on elite teams must be more proficient finishers to match his goal tally.
Even in the early stages of the new Premier League season, Haaland is already demonstrating his unstoppable nature when it comes to creating chances. Currently the top scorer with three goals in three games, he has produced twice the expected goals (xG) of any other player and arguably could have scored even more, underscoring that there is much more to his phenomenal goal-scoring than just finishing.
