Ethan Ampadu's Injury Poses Challenge for Wales Ahead of World Cup Qualifier

Wales may face a significant setback in their World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan in September, as centre-back Ethan Ampadu is likely to be unavailable due to a knee injury.

The Leeds United captain sustained the injury during their 1-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League on Monday. Manager Daniel Farke described the situation as "bad news," indicating that Ampadu will be sidelined at least until the international break.

Farke expressed hope that the 24-year-old defender would return to fitness following the national team's trip to Kazakhstan on September 4, ahead of a friendly match against Canada five days later.

"He’s a tough boy. He will miss the next three games, including the cup match," Farke noted. "I hope to have him back after the international break. It’s a blow for us that he will miss the upcoming games. It’s not ideal; he’s our captain and a very important player. We will have to find some solutions."

Wales currently sits second in Group J of their qualifying campaign, following their only defeat to date—a thrilling 4-3 loss to Belgium in June. They trail North Macedonia by a point, who recently secured a 1-0 win against Kazakhstan, while Belgium is in third place, three points behind but with two games in hand.

Ampadu's consistent performance has made him a key player for Wales, and his absence in the match against Kazakhstan would undoubtedly be a significant loss for the team.
