Exciting Developments in EFL as Teams Make Their Mark
Another eventful day in the EFL featured unexpected results and decisive victories.
Sheffield United struggled in their match under Chris Wilder, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Charlton, while Queens Park Rangers marked their resurgence with a win over the high-flying Stoke City.
Wrexham continued to shake things up in the Championship, and both Bradford City and Gillingham set their intentions clear in League One and League Two, respectively.
Sheffield United Struggles Under Wilder
After sacking Ruben Selles and reappointing Chris Wilder for a third term, Sheffield United faced a setback, losing 1-0 to Charlton in the dying moments at Bramall Lane.
Parkin: "Many expected a positive response from the crowd and players with Wilder's return. However, Sheffield United is clearly facing challenges. Although it's early in the season and these issues can be resolved, there is a noticeable lack of confidence and team chemistry.
"Losing seven consecutive matches is concerning at any level of football. Improvement won't happen overnight. Their creativity is lacking; they have only scored once in the league. While they retained most of their squad from last year, players like Jesurun Rak-Sakyi and Kieffer Moore will be crucial for Wilder as he attempts to replicate last season's success with [Gustavo] Hamer.
"Currently, they are a team in search of identity, whereas Charlton and Nathan Jones have a clear understanding of their direction."
Wrexham's Creative Play Meets Defensive Concerns
Wrexham triumphed over Norwich with a 3-2 victory at Carrow Road, leveling on points with the Canaries thanks to a brace from Josh Windass and a goal from Ryan Longman.
Parkin: "Phil Parkinson has made significant changes this season, not in style but in personnel. Wrexham boasts a strong squad capable of adaptation, which is a hallmark of a good manager. Despite facing criticism, his ability to adjust the starting lineup has proven effective.
"Norwich was an ideal opponent as they tend to concede many chances. Wrexham is generating opportunities but must improve defensively. I have no doubts about their scoring ability, but they need to shore up their backline. They narrowly secured the win, and I have confidence in Wrexham's strong squad."
QPR's Recovery Sparks Optimism
Queens Park Rangers, who suffered a staggering 7-1 defeat to Coventry a few weeks ago, celebrated their third consecutive win with a 1-0 victory over Stoke.
Parkin: "The Coventry loss was a pivotal moment for QPR this season, prompting the manager to reevaluate their approach.
"The front line is now looking strong, with Ruman Burrell and Richard Kone grabbing headlines in recent matches, while Harvey Vale also shined with his first goal. There is palpable excitement, and Julien Stephan has demonstrated flexibility in his tactics.
"They struggled with possession early in the season, but that issue seems to have been addressed. The players now receive simpler instructions, and their pace and quality in attack are evident. They managed the game effectively today.
"Three consecutive victories after a slow start should inspire optimism among fans."
Bradford Aiming for Promotion
Bradford City climbed to the top of League One after defeating Cardiff 3-1, handing the Welsh side their first loss of the season following relegation from the Championship.
Parkin: "I wasn't surprised by this outcome, despite Cardiff's promising start. Bradford is a formidable team that plays with an intensity capable of disrupting their opponents.
"Cardiff has transitioned to a high-possession style under Brian Barry-Murphy, but Bradford's aggressive approach effectively pressured them. They are a strong side with quality players, and the consistency in their system from last season, along with continuity in management, has been beneficial at Valley Parade.
"I have no doubt Bradford could finish in the top half, if not better, and I wouldn't be surprised if they challenge for promotion again."
Gillingham's Forward Quality Shines
Gareth Ainsworth's Gillingham demonstrated resilience by coming from behind to defeat Newport 3-1, maintaining their excellent start at the top of League Two.
Parkin: "This match showcased their strength, as they turned the game around after initially falling behind. Scoring to overcome deficits has been a recurring theme this season.
"They possess significant quality in their attacking options, particularly with Bradley Dack and Jonny Williams providing excellent support behind the striker. Dack was instrumental today.
"Gillingham has momentum and is led by an intense and demanding manager. I am confident they will be in the promotion mix by season's end, and Gareth Ainsworth deserves commendation for his efforts."
Sam Parkin was speaking to BBC Sport England's Harry De Cosemo.
