Frustration for Southampton in Goalless Draw Against Millwall
Southampton faced disappointment as they were held to a goalless draw by an underperforming Millwall side at St Mary's Stadium.
The Saints started the match strongly, dominating possession, but struggled to convert their control into goals, managing only two shots on target throughout the game.
Millwall, particularly through the efforts of Femi Azeez, posed a threat on the counterattack but were similarly ineffective in front of goal.
This result leaves Millwall with just one win in their last six matches, placing them seventh in the league and outside the playoff positions on goal difference. Southampton, meanwhile, remains winless in five games and is languishing in mid-table.
Millwall began confidently, coming close to scoring within the first two minutes when Azeez delivered a low cross that went unanswered in front of goal.
Southampton gradually found their rhythm and missed a good opportunity when Cameron Archer failed to connect with Nathan Wood's header from a Ryan Manning free-kick.
Azeez continued to be a menace, driving forward to set up Thierno Ballo, who forced Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu into action for the first time. Shortly after, Jack Stephens had a shot that went straight to Millwall's Max Crocombe.
Taylor Harwood-Bellis nearly broke the deadlock when he connected with Leo Scienza's corner from close range, but Crocombe managed an impressive point-blank save.
Ballo had another chance ten minutes after the break, but he dragged his shot wide after receiving a clever pass from Macauley Langstaff.
Southampton dominated much of the second half, continuing to apply pressure without finding the decisive finish. A dangerous cross from Finn Azaz led to a scramble in the box, but Millwall managed to clear the danger.
Azaz squandered a golden opportunity in the sixth minute of stoppage time when his shot was blocked after an Adam Armstrong cutback. Harwood-Bellis then headed wide, bringing a frustrating afternoon to a close for the hosts.
Manager Reactions
Southampton's Tonda Eckert
Southampton manager Tonda Eckert spoke to BBC Radio Solent, stating, "If you draw a game, it depends what happens after. If we can secure a positive result against Middlesbrough, there will be positives to take from this match. We could have won at the end. I'm happy with the clean sheet; we work hard on that. We didn’t capitalize on our chances. It has been four games in ten days, and I was pleased with the players who stepped in today. It’s the second consecutive game where we've had a good impact from the bench."
Millwall's Alex Neil
Millwall manager Alex Neil commented to BBC Radio London, "It was a great performance. We changed our shape for various reasons. We were the better side and created the better chances. We’ve drawn with Ipswich, beaten Bristol City, and come here. Given our available resources, I thought it was terrific. We had opportunities but lacked the finishing touch. Our game plan was to turn the ball over and create on the counter; the balance was excellent. I couldn't be more pleased with the lads."
