Millwall Secures Dramatic Victory Over Southampton
Millwall's Tristan Crama scored in the seventh minute of added time, handing Tonda Eckert his first defeat as Southampton's caretaker manager.
Southampton appeared to have salvaged a point when Finn Azaz extended his scoring streak under Eckert to five goals in four matches with a strike three minutes from the end of regular time.
However, Crama netted a dramatic late winner at The Den, helping the Lions maintain their promotion push as they moved up to third place in the league.
Earlier in the match, Adam Armstrong had given Southampton the lead from the penalty spot in the 55th minute, but Millwall quickly responded with goals from Femi Azeez and Caleb Taylor.
Millwall's goalkeeper Max Crocombe proved to be the savior in the early stages, denying Armstrong, Azaz, and Jay Robinson with crucial saves.
Millwall also threatened, with Jack Stephens making a goalline clearance and Aidomo Emakhu and Azeez coming close to scoring, while Saints goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu saved a shot from Mihailo Ivanovic.
Southampton took the lead against the run of play ten minutes into the second half when Jake Cooper fouled Taylor Harwood-Bellis, allowing Armstrong to convert his seventh goal of the season.
Millwall increased the pressure and justly equalized when Azeez fired home from a pass by Crama.
The Lions then took the lead in the 81st minute when Taylor fired into the top right corner from outside the box.
Southampton managed to level the score three minutes from time when a header from Harwood-Bellis was saved by Crocombe, allowing Azaz to score from the rebound.
However, the drama was not over; after Ryan Manning cleared a shot off the line, Crama arrived at the back post to score the decisive goal.
This late defeat was heartbreaking for Southampton but fully deserved for Millwall, putting Alex Neil's side firmly back on track in their quest for a Premier League place.
Saints' Reaction: 'Not Easy to Manage the Game'
Southampton's caretaker manager Tonda Eckert spoke to BBC Radio Solent:
"It's disappointing. We knew it wouldn't be easy to come here. I commend the boys for how we fought back, but we needed to see it through to the end.
"Credit also goes to Millwall. They are a well-organized team, and it’s challenging to find solutions against them.
"I didn’t expect them to score when we went up 1-0, but once they equalized in a sold-out stadium, it was difficult to manage the game, and that’s an area we need to improve on."
When asked about his chances of securing the job permanently:
"That’s not a topic for today. We just lost the game, and we need to focus on being strong for next Saturday."
