Grimsby Town Advances to Fourth Round of Carabao Cup
League Two side Grimsby Town, who notably eliminated Manchester United in the second round of the Carabao Cup, secured a well-deserved victory against struggling Sheffield Wednesday, advancing to the fourth round of the competition.
Due to ongoing protests against Dejphon Chansiri's ownership, home fans boycotted the match, resulting in a crowd that featured nearly twice as many Grimsby supporters as those from Sheffield Wednesday.
Grimsby dominated the first half and took the lead shortly after the break when Jaze Kabia headed in a corner delivered by Reece Staunton.
Despite having several chances to extend their lead, a single goal proved sufficient against a Wednesday team that made ten changes following their Championship defeat to Bristol City on Saturday.
This marks Grimsby’s first appearance in the fourth round since the 2001-02 season.
For the beleaguered home side, their only two victories this season had come via penalties against Bolton and Leeds in this competition, and they were unable to find an equalizer, with Grimsby goalkeeper Christy Pym not needing to make a single save throughout the match.
Grimsby brought approximately 6,000 fans from Lincolnshire to South Yorkshire and started the match brightly against a very inexperienced Wednesday side.
Kabia narrowly missed with a shot, and Kieran Green forced a save from Ethan Horvath in the opening 20 minutes, but the home side managed to hold on until halftime.
However, just four minutes into the second half, Kabia, who played for Truro City in the sixth tier last season, scored from a well-placed inswinging delivery by Staunton, rewarding Grimsby for their dominance.
Sheffield Wednesday struggled to respond, and both Jamie Walker and Charles Vernam had opportunities to increase Grimsby’s lead.
Grimsby Town will be hoping for a favorable draw in the last 16 of the competition, which will take place next Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday will refocus on their league campaign as they seek their first Championship victory of the season during their visit to Portsmouth on Saturday, while the Mariners will head to Barnet in League Two.
